This project was built and designed by Mike from Oregon Makers. It features two clever ways to store bicycles in a garage: a ceiling-mounted pulley system and a wall-mounted clip for bikes without kickstands.

Both methods help maximize space and add a more organized, clean look to any storage area. Whether you want to hang up a cruiser or display a BMX bike, these solutions are simple, functional, and visually effective.

Why Bicycle Storage Deserves Attention

As biking grows in popularity, so does the challenge of finding a place to store bikes—especially in garages that already hold tools, vehicles, or yard equipment. Laying bikes on the floor wastes space and risks damage.

Mike’s approach tackles this issue with two distinct storage systems. One lifts bikes up and out of the way using a ceiling pulley, while the other turns a wall-mounted pedal clip into a sleek and sturdy display option.

The Ceiling-Mounted Pulley System

The first solution Mike demonstrates is a pulley hoist designed for larger bikes, like beach cruisers or mountain bikes without kickstands. This system uses ceiling space to keep the bike off the floor and out of the way.

The process starts with measuring the bike from seat to handlebars to determine pulley placement. This ensures the bike won’t tilt or bump into nearby walls once it’s lifted.

Using a hammer drill, Mike installs brackets into the ceiling joists. The brackets serve as the mounting points for the pulleys and need to be fastened securely to bear the weight of the suspended bike.

Installing and Threading the Pulleys

After the brackets are in place, the pulleys are attached. Threading the rope evenly through both sides is key to making the lift smooth and balanced. Misalignment can cause the bike to hang crooked or place stress on one side.

Once the pulleys are installed and tested, the lift system becomes a simple one-person operation. The bike can be raised or lowered with ease, making it both a practical storage option and a display-worthy addition to the garage.

A Wall Mount for Bikes Without Kickstands

The second solution focuses on bikes like BMX models that don’t come with kickstands. For these, Mike builds a DIY wall mount that secures the bike via its pedal, keeping it vertical and stable.

This system is especially useful for showcasing a favorite bike or storing one in a tight space. It also helps prevent the bike from falling over or being leaned awkwardly against a wall.

Building the Pedal Clip Mount

To make the wall mount, Mike first constructs a jig to hold the bike’s pedal. This jig is built from solid wood and shaped to cradle the pedal securely while allowing easy removal.

The pedal holder is angled so the bike naturally leans back into the wall. Additional shaping like beveling or sanding softens the edges and gives the mount a cleaner, more intentional look.

Once built, the jig is attached to the wall at a carefully measured height. Mike recommends locating wall studs and adding blocking behind the drywall to make sure the mount stays solid under the bike’s weight.

Installing the Wall Mount

After locating studs and reinforcing the mounting area, the pedal clip is installed. A simple level check ensures the bike will sit evenly once it’s in place.

Clipping the bike in is easy: just guide the pedal into the holder, and the bike naturally leans into the wall without needing any straps or hooks. The mount holds the bike upright, saving floor space and showcasing the frame.

Practical, Stylish, and Easy to Use

Both of these storage methods are designed to be functional without being overly complex. The pulley system helps remove clutter from the garage floor, while the wall-mounted pedal clip turns your bike into part of the decor.

These options also make routine access easier. You won’t need to dig through a pile of gear to find your bike, and you won’t risk knocking it over when moving things around.

A Great Upgrade for Any Garage

Mike’s dual-storage approach provides flexibility for different types of bikes and garage layouts. Each system is designed with ease of use and safety in mind, while still offering a clean, polished final look.

For woodworkers and DIYers looking for a satisfying weekend project, this one checks all the boxes. It’s simple, effective, and results in a more organized garage space.
