A Solution for Everyday Needs
Jason’s goal was to create a set of matching nightstands that could hold lamps, books, and electronics without clutter.
The result is a piece that feels both decorative and practical.
By adding hidden wireless charging and integrating a power outlet directly into the build, Jason removed the need for extra cables or surface clutter. It’s a great example of how modern tech can be blended into traditional woodworking.
Materials and Style
The main materials include poplar for the frame, ash for the tops, and Baltic Birch plywood for the drawer boxes and sides.
However, Jason notes that common construction lumber can easily be substituted depending on your budget or availability.
The finish features a stained top and a distressed antique white paint for the base.
This farmhouse-style look gives the nightstands warmth and character while offering plenty of room for customization.
Building the Frame
The process starts with breaking down and prepping the hardwood stock. Legs, stretchers, and rails are all cut to length and assembled using pocket hole joinery.
Jason tapers the legs slightly, giving the stand a subtle elegant shape that still feels sturdy.
Once the frame is assembled, plywood panels are added to the sides using glue and screws. Pocket holes make for quick and secure attachment, and they’re later hidden behind drawer components.
Drawer Support and Back Panel
After completing the frame and side panels, a plywood back panel is added. This stabilizes the unit and provides additional structure.
Jason then moves on to adding internal drawer supports. These are simple cleats and runners that make installing and aligning drawers much easier during final assembly.
Crafting the Top
The nightstand tops are made from glued-up ash boards. Jason uses biscuits to keep everything aligned during glue-up. After the glue dries, the top is sanded flat and the edges are eased slightly to remove sharp corners.
The result is a smooth, seamless surface that contrasts beautifully with the painted base.
It’s a subtle but effective way to elevate the final look of the piece.
Building and Installing the Drawers
Drawer boxes are constructed from plywood using pocket hole screws, with a ¼-inch bottom set into dado grooves. The construction is simple and solid, designed for everyday use.
After sanding, the drawers are installed using full-extension drawer slides. Jason takes extra care to ensure that each drawer glides smoothly and lines up correctly with the face frame.
Edge banding is added to the drawer fronts to give them the look of solid wood.
These are then painted and attached after the body and drawers have been fully finished.
Paint, Stain, and Finishing
The base is painted with a distressed antique white finish while the top is stained to highlight the natural ash grain. This combination creates a timeless farmhouse-style look that can blend with almost any bedroom decor.
Jason finishes all components separately before final assembly to keep the paint lines clean and avoid missed spots.
After staining, a protective topcoat is applied to both the drawers and top surface.
Adding Charging and Power Features
The highlight of the design is the hidden wireless charger and built-in outlet.
Jason routes a recess on the underside of the tabletop to house the wireless charger, keeping it invisible from above.
A power strip is mounted inside the rear of the nightstand, feeding both the charger and other plug-in devices. The final result is clean and clutter-free charging without sacrificing function or appearance.
Final Assembly
The tabletop is secured using z-clips, which allow for seasonal wood movement without stress. This is a small detail, but one that contributes to long-term durability.
With the drawer faces aligned and hardware installed, the nightstands are complete and ready for use.
They’re sturdy, stylish, and full of practical features that make them feel custom-built for daily life.
A Functional and Stylish Addition
Jason’s project is a great example of how thoughtful design can solve everyday problems.
With smart storage, integrated power, and a clean two-tone finish, these nightstands offer more than just surface space—they add value and convenience.
Whether you’re looking to improve your shop skills or just want better furniture for your home, this project is worth the effort.
It’s a rewarding build that blends traditional woodworking with modern living.
