This project was built and designed by Jay Bates. It features a set of stylish, space-saving chairs made specifically for relaxing around a fire pit.
Jay’s design focuses on clean lines, smart storage, and outdoor comfort. These nesting chairs are perfect for backyard gatherings and make excellent use of limited space when not in use.

Creating a Comfortable Outdoor Setup
The idea for these chairs came from a larger outdoor project that began with the installation of a Brio smokeless fire pit. While the full outdoor kitchen is still in progress, the fire pit has already become the centerpiece of Jay’s backyard space.
To complement the fire pit, Jay set out to build seating that would be both functional and easy to store. Traditional chairs can take up a lot of room, especially when not in use. His solution: nesting chairs that stack cleanly while still offering comfortable support.
Why Nesting Chairs?
Nesting chairs are ideal for outdoor environments where storage space is limited. They stack together when not in use, minimizing their footprint and keeping the area tidy.
Jay’s version is built with smooth transitions and tight tolerances so that one chair can slide directly into the next. It’s a clever take on a classic design that emphasizes ease of use and portability.
Designing for Simplicity and Style
Each chair is designed to be lightweight yet sturdy, with a visual flow that matches modern outdoor aesthetics. The backrest and seat are formed using matching curved frames, which lock into place without screws or additional fasteners.
The design relies on gravity and careful fit, which eliminates the need for visible brackets or hardware. The result is a clean, seamless look that’s both comfortable and stylish.
Using Templates and Pattern Routing
To maintain consistency across multiple chairs, Jay uses routing templates. These templates make it easy to trace and cut the same shapes over and over, speeding up the process and improving accuracy.
He uses a flush-trim bit with a router to shape each frame section. This method is especially helpful for creating curved pieces where a saw alone might not be precise enough.
Material Choices and Tool Options
While Jay doesn’t provide a full cut list, he recommends choosing hardwood for strength and outdoor durability. Woods like white oak or cedar work well, especially when paired with a good outdoor finish.
Depending on your workshop setup, this project can be tackled with either CNC tools or more traditional hand tools. Pattern routing and basic drilling are the core techniques, making this build approachable even without advanced equipment.
Cutting and Preparing the Parts
Before assembly, each board is milled flat and cut to rough dimensions. Using templates, the curved frames for the seat and back are cut and refined.
Pilot holes are drilled for all fasteners to prevent the hardwood from splitting. Jay also takes time to round over edges, making the chairs more comfortable and giving them a finished look.
Assembling the Backrest and Seat
The backrest is built first, with slats mounted between two curved frames. These slats are evenly spaced and secured with screws, offering strong support across the upper back.
Next, the seat frame is constructed in a similar manner and sized precisely to slide into the backrest frame. This allows each chair to stack into the next, saving space and making storage simple.
Spacers and Consistent Fit
Jay uses spacers during the assembly to maintain perfect alignment between parts. This ensures each chair nests properly with the others, avoiding issues with fit or uneven angles.
The assembly is straightforward, with each part fitting into its intended place. A few clamps and screws are all that’s needed to complete the build.
Finishing the Project
For the finish, Jay applies an oil-wax blend that enhances the wood grain while offering basic outdoor protection. While not waterproof, the finish helps protect the chairs from light moisture and sun exposure.
Jay does recommend storing the chairs out of direct rain to prolong their life. With basic maintenance, these chairs should last for many seasons of outdoor use.
Enjoying the New Firepit Setup
With the chairs complete, Jay’s firepit area is ready for evenings outside with friends and family. The nesting design keeps the space flexible—easy to expand when guests arrive, and just as easy to tidy up when the night ends.
Whether roasting marshmallows or enjoying a quiet night under the stars, these chairs offer a comfortable seat and a smart design.
Customize to Fit Your Style
This design can be modified to suit different preferences. Consider using other wood types, changing the backrest angle, or adding cushions for extra comfort.
Jay’s project is a great foundation for anyone looking to upgrade their backyard. The clear process, repeatable steps, and minimal materials make it a solid choice for a weekend build.
