Modern Craft Paper Dispenser

This project was built and designed by Chris from A Glimpse Inside. It’s a clean, modern craft paper dispenser made from Baltic birch plywood and aluminum—perfect for organizing your workspace with style.

Whether you’re wrapping packages, sketching, or jotting down notes, having craft paper at the ready can be a huge convenience. This dispenser combines function and aesthetics into one sharp-looking piece.

Starting the Build

Chris begins the project with a full sheet of Baltic birch plywood. The first task is breaking it down into strips using a table saw, which helps form the sides and base of the dispenser.

Once cut into manageable pieces, the plywood is divided into two types—longer strips for the base and shorter, varied sections for the sides. The side panels are designed with a unique stair-step pattern that gives the project an architectural look.

Constructing the Frame

With all the pieces cut, Chris uses a stop block on the fence to ensure consistent lengths for each side section. Keeping each cut identical is important for the geometric pattern to work properly.

The side sections are glued and tacked together using brad nails. The result is a lightweight, eye-catching panel that sets the tone for the modern design.

Next, attention shifts to the base of the dispenser. Chris uses spacers to help align oversized finger joints that are both strong and visually interesting.

Once the joints are assembled, the frame is sanded thoroughly using progressively finer grits. This smooth finish preps the wood for final assembly and ensures no sharp edges remain.

Building the Paper Roll Holder

With the frame in place, Chris turns to the component that holds the craft paper itself. A wooden dowel is measured and cut to length, designed to rotate freely while remaining snug in its slots.

Cutouts are made on the side panels using a bandsaw. These notches are symmetrical, allowing the dowel to spin cleanly while staying securely in place.

This spinning action is important for smooth paper movement and easy access. Chris checks alignment throughout to make sure the function matches the design.

Creating the Paper Feed

To allow paper to feed out of the dispenser, Chris initially considers using a hinge but opts for a cleaner solution. A simple strip of aluminum is cut and mounted across the base to act as the feed guide.

Countersunk screw holes are drilled into the aluminum to keep fasteners flush with the surface. The edges are filed and sanded to remove any sharpness for safety during daily use.

This aluminum strip keeps the paper in place while still letting it move freely. It’s a smart and minimal approach that complements the modern look of the dispenser.

Final Assembly and Finishing

Before wrapping up the project, Chris tests the dispenser to make sure the paper flows smoothly and cuts cleanly. Small rubber feet are added to the bottom for stability, keeping the unit from shifting during use.

Once satisfied with the build, he applies a few coats of spray lacquer. This finish protects the wood and gives it a clean, matte appearance that fits well in any workspace.

Why This Dispenser Is Worth Building

This project turns a sheet of plywood and a few simple parts into something stylish and useful. It keeps craft paper organized and accessible while adding a modern design element to your room.

The dispenser works well in home offices, creative studios, or garages. It’s a great example of blending thoughtful design with everyday utility.
