This project was built and designed by Sam from Sam Macy Designs. It’s a simple, practical step stool made from leftover maple and inspired by a design originally posted on Lumberjocks by Thor Thorin Okenshield.

Sam adapted the design without plans or precise dimensions, relying on the basic concept to guide the process. It’s a great example of taking inspiration and turning it into a personalized, useful shop build.

Why a Step Stool Is Worth Making

A step stool is one of those household items you never realize you need until you do. Whether you’re reaching for the top shelf or giving your kids a boost at the counter, it makes daily tasks more convenient.

Building your own allows you to customize the size, shape, and finish to fit your space. It’s also a quick project that helps you make use of scrap hardwood from previous builds.

Choosing Materials and Getting Started

Sam chose maple for this build, using leftover material from past projects. Maple is durable, stable, and strong enough to support everyday use.

Before assembly begins, the boards are flattened and cut to size. This step ensures each surface is level, which is important for stability once the stool is assembled.

Joinery and Assembly

To join the parts together, Sam uses dowels. This method creates strong, hidden joints that give the piece a clean look without visible hardware.

Careful alignment during glue-up helps keep the stool square. Each joint is clamped securely and checked for accuracy before moving to the next step.

The stool includes angled legs for better stability and a wider stance. These angles are measured and cut precisely to ensure an even and safe platform.

Adding Details and Comfort

Once the frame is complete, Sam adds a top surface with slightly rounded edges. This makes the stool more comfortable to use and softens the look.

Optional side handles can be added for portability. These small changes make it easier to move the stool around the house without sacrificing strength.

Finishing the Stool

After assembly, the entire piece is sanded smooth. Special care is taken to round off sharp corners and edges for safety.

For the finish, Sam applies a protective oil that brings out the natural grain of the maple. This choice adds warmth and makes the stool more resistant to wear over time.

Final Thoughts

This step stool is a straightforward build that’s useful in nearly every room. It’s lightweight, sturdy, and built to last with clean lines and functional design.

Repurposing leftover wood into something practical is always satisfying. If you’re looking for a quick, skill-building project, this one fits the bill.
