This project was built and designed by Chris from B&O Craftsman.
This quick, foldable manger is a simple, meaningful holiday display that can be made in a single day using common materials and minimal tools.

Design
The build centers on a minimalist silhouette of the baby Jesus and a star mounted above a collapsible manger frame made from common dimensional lumber.
Chris favors a pared-down aesthetic that keeps the visual focus on the silhouette while making the assembly easy to store and transport.
Joinery and Folding Mechanism
Rather than fixed joints, the manger uses simple hinge-style connections created with drilled holes and carriage bolts to let the sides fold flat for storage.
Additional lag screws act as locking pins so the panels stay set at the desired angle while remaining removable for disassembly or travel.
Silhouette Cutting and Surface Prep
The focal silhouette is cut from a single sheet of plywood using a printed template to transfer the shape, then sanded and sealed for paint.
Chris primes and paints the cutout to a clean, weather-resistant finish so the figure reads clearly at a distance when mounted in the manger.
Mounting and Placement
The completed assembly can be screwed directly to a wooden deck using simple brackets for solid support and wind resistance.
For ground placement, the same bracket locations can accept yard stakes or added weight to hold the manger steady without permanent fasteners.
Finishing Touches and Accessorizing
A star mounted above the manger adds a focal highlight and can incorporate backlighting for a soft glow that emphasizes the silhouette at night.
Chris demonstrates the star separately, showing how a simple illuminated element elevates the overall display without complicating the basic build.
Lessons and Adaptations
The core idea is adaptable: change the silhouette, scale the frame, or swap materials to suit different budgets and display locations.
Using removable fasteners for the hinge points makes the design flexible—easy to tweak angles, replace parts, or pack away between seasons.

Matt’s Take
These are my personal thoughts and tips based on my own experience in the shop. This section is not written, reviewed, or endorsed by the original creator of this project.
The folding mechanism here is really clever for seasonal decorations. Using carriage bolts as hinge pins with lag screws as stops gives you that sweet spot between sturdy and portable. When you’re drilling those hinge holes, take your time to keep them aligned—even small variations can make the panels bind when folding. A drill press helps, but careful marking and pilot holes work fine too.
For the silhouette cutting, a jigsaw with a fine-tooth blade will handle the curves nicely. The key is going slow through the tighter turns and supporting the cutout piece so it doesn’t tear away at the end of the cut. If you don’t have a jigsaw, many lumber yards and makerspaces will cut basic shapes for you.
The mounting flexibility is what makes this design shine. Those bracket points let you adapt to whatever situation you’ve got—deck screws for permanent spots, stakes for the yard, or even sandbags if you’re dealing with concrete. Weather resistance comes down to your finish choice, so don’t skip the primer if this is going outdoors. A good exterior paint will keep that silhouette looking sharp season after season.
