This project was built and designed by Clinton from Specific Love Creations. It features a floating full-size bed frame with integrated storage and underglow lighting—an ideal combination of modern design and practical functionality for small bedrooms.
Clinton’s approach emphasizes smart use of materials, clean lines, and structural stability. The result is a durable and stylish bed that adds character to any space and offers clever storage solutions for everyday living.

Starting with the Design
The bed is designed to fit a full-size mattress, with a floating effect created by a recessed base and hidden lighting. This not only enhances the room’s visual appeal but also makes the space feel larger and more open.
In addition to aesthetics, the design includes hidden compartments for storage. These built-in features keep the space tidy without the need for additional furniture, making it perfect for rooms with limited square footage.
Material Selection and Planning
Clinton uses standard pine lumber for this build, including 2x10s, 2x4s, and plywood panels. These materials are easy to find at most home improvement stores and provide a sturdy base without breaking the budget.
Cutting all lumber before assembly helps streamline the process. Each piece is measured carefully, cut slightly oversized, and trimmed for clean, square ends. This method ensures better accuracy and reduces clutter during the build.
Removing the Old Bed
Before construction begins, the existing bed is disassembled and moved out of the way. While dismantling the old frame, Clinton reflects on its longevity and simplicity—it had served well for years with just a few rails and support slats.
The transition from the old bed to a new, upgraded version marks a meaningful moment. Clinton treats this step with care, knowing the new bed will offer both comfort and improved function.
Building the Structural Base
The foundation of the new bed uses an I-beam layout for strength. This internal frame is what gives the bed its ability to “float” while holding significant weight without sagging.
Each piece is checked for alignment and square corners. Pre-drilling holes before driving screws is a simple but effective way to prevent wood splitting and keep the build clean.
Integrating Hidden Storage
To create the hidden storage, Clinton incorporates panel doors into the outer structure of the frame. These doors blend in with the design and provide discreet access to items tucked underneath the mattress.
Hinges are installed with pre-drilled pilot holes to prevent cracks and ensure smooth opening. The result is a sleek, functional frame with bonus storage that doesn’t sacrifice style.
Enhancing the Wood Finish
Clinton initially considered a burnt finish but decided on a wood accelerator instead. This finish deepens the natural tones and brings out grain patterns without the mess or risk of torching.
The accelerated finish gives the pine a rich, aged look that contrasts nicely with the clean edges of the frame. It’s an easy way to add character while maintaining safety and simplicity.
Assembling the Outer Frame
With the base and storage elements in place, the outer frame is constructed. Corner squares and diagonal measurements help keep everything aligned as the structure comes together.
Hurricane ties are added to reinforce key joints, increasing stability and minimizing any shifting over time. These ties aren’t always necessary but add confidence to a build meant to last.
Testing for Stability
Before installing the mattress, Clinton tests the frame’s strength by walking across the slats and applying weight in key areas. This confirms that the structure is solid and won’t tip or wobble.
Once the mattress is added, the overall feel is sturdy and grounded. Even with the floating effect, there’s no compromise on safety or durability.
Installing LED Lighting
To complete the floating illusion, LED light strips are mounted under the frame. Clinton installs these before final assembly, taking advantage of the open structure for easy access.
The LED strips attach with adhesive backing and plug into a nearby outlet. When turned on, the lights cast a soft glow under the bed, giving it a dramatic, floating appearance.
Final Reveal and Reactions
With all components in place, the finished bed frame blends style, function, and comfort. The hidden storage keeps the room clutter-free, and the LED lighting adds a high-end touch.
Clinton highlights the long-term value of the build—not just as a furniture piece, but as something that can be handed down to future generations. It’s a functional centerpiece built to last.
