This project was built and designed by Clinton from Specific Love Creations.
It’s a smart, space-saving table designed to sit snugly behind a couch while offering both extra surface space and integrated power outlets for everyday use.
This project solves a common living room problem—having no convenient place for phones, remotes, drinks, or lamps.
With its clean design and built-in functionality, this table adds both comfort and practicality to the space.

Why a Behind Sofa Table Is Worth Building
Standard couches often sit a few inches from the wall, leaving unused space.
Clinton turns that gap into an opportunity by building a table that fills the void and adds surface space right where it’s needed.
Integrated power outlets eliminate the need for visible extension cords or awkward reach-arounds to charge devices.
With a place to keep remotes, snacks, phones, and lamps, this table makes daily living more convenient and organized.
Materials and Design
The tabletop is made from solid pine, trimmed to fit the width of the sofa for a custom look.
For the frame and leg structure, Clinton uses furring strips and repurposed balusters. These turned spindle legs bring some subtle decorative detail to an otherwise simple piece.
Using pine and furring strips keeps costs down and makes the project approachable for any home woodworker.
The finished table is sturdy enough to hold daily-use items without overwhelming the space visually.
Framing and Assembly
The build starts with trimming the tabletop to match the sofa width. Clinton focuses on getting clean cuts and smooth edges to create a polished look from the start.
Next, the baluster legs are cut to length and sanded to remove any previous joinery marks.
The legs are attached using furring strips that run the length of the underside, offering added strength and keeping the frame square.
Clinton uses pocket hole joinery and wood glue to assemble the frame. This combination ensures that everything stays locked together while keeping visible fasteners to a minimum.
Adding Power Outlets
The standout feature of this table is the pair of integrated outlets installed directly into the tabletop. These are positioned near both ends of the table for easy access, no matter which side of the sofa you’re sitting on.
Clinton cuts out recessed spaces for the outlet boxes using a jigsaw and drill, keeping the boxes flush with the surface for a cleaner finish.
He connects them to fabric-wrapped extension cords that run discretely along the bottom side.
Bronze-colored, screwless outlets are used to complement the final stain color. Once wired, the entire system is tested to ensure it’s safe and functional.
Sanding, Staining, and Painting
To finish the table, the top is sanded smooth and stained a rich mahogany color. This deep tone was chosen to complement the existing sofa and enhance the natural grain of the pine.
The legs and structural supports are painted white to create contrast and help the design blend in with the room’s décor.
This two-tone finish gives the piece a modern look while still highlighting the classic turned leg detail.
Multiple coats of stain and paint are applied, with light sanding in between for a professional, smooth finish. The result is both eye-catching and durable.
Placement and Everyday Use
Once finished, the table is set into place directly behind the sofa.
It fits neatly and adds instant functionality—providing a spot for small lamps, drinks, chargers, or speakers.
With the built-in outlets, it’s easy to keep devices powered up or add ambient lighting without trailing cords across the floor. The setup is cleaner, safer, and more attractive than using extension cords or outlet strips.
Collaboration and Enjoyment
This project also showcases a collaborative effort between Clinton and his wife, who helped with several finishing steps.
The teamwork not only made the project more enjoyable but also added to its quality and personal value.
By turning a small, unused space into something both useful and stylish, Clinton shows how woodworking can elevate everyday living.
It’s a great example of how thoughtful design solves real-world problems.
