These are my personal thoughts and tips based on my own experience in the shop. This section is not written, reviewed, or endorsed by the original creator of this project.
MDF is a great choice for a project like this, especially when you’re planning to paint the finished piece. That smooth surface takes paint beautifully, and you won’t have to worry about wood grain telegraphing through your finish. Just keep in mind that MDF can be dusty when you cut it, so good dust collection or at least a quality dust mask is essential. The edges can also be a bit thirsty when it comes to paint, so a good primer will help you get an even finish.
Those curved cuts are where this project gets interesting from a technique standpoint. A jigsaw works well for this kind of work, but taking your time with the blade selection makes a difference. A fine-tooth blade will give you cleaner cuts in MDF, and going slow helps prevent tear-out on the bottom face. If you’re nervous about freehand curves, consider making a template from cardboard first to get the shape dialed in.
Pocket holes are perfect for this type of assembly work. They’re strong, they’re hidden, and they make alignment much easier than trying to clamp everything square with traditional joinery.
