Why Box Joints Matter
Box joints are widely used for drawers, boxes, and cabinetry because they provide excellent mechanical strength and a large surface area for glue. The interlocking design prevents separation and adds a distinctive visual detail.
Unlike butt joints, which rely heavily on glue or fasteners, box joints lock together and distribute stress evenly. This makes them ideal for applications where strength and alignment are critical.
Advantages of Using a Jig
Cutting box joints by hand is possible, but it requires careful layout and high precision. This jig removes the guesswork, allowing woodworkers to produce uniform joints quickly and repeatably.
Jodee’s design adds the benefit of adjustability. With just a few turns, the jig can be set for different joint widths without needing multiple jigs or complicated setups.
Materials and Tools
The jig is built from high-quality plywood, chosen for its stability and smooth surface. Plywood holds up well to repeated use and is easy to work with using standard shop tools.
Essential tools for this build include a table saw, drill press, clamps, and some hand tools for assembly. Additional hardware such as knobs, bolts, and threaded inserts is used to create the adjustable features.
Starting with the Base
The first step in the build is creating the base—this serves as the platform for the entire jig. It must be flat and rigid to support smooth movement along the saw’s miter slots.
Jodee secures runners to the base so the jig slides consistently during use. These runners must fit snugly in the miter slots to prevent slop, which would otherwise affect the accuracy of each cut.
Setting Up the Fences
With the base complete, a stationary fence is added first. This fence acts as a reference edge and needs to be perfectly square to the base to ensure accurate cuts.
The adjustable fence is mounted in front of the stationary one. This secondary fence allows the user to set the spacing between cuts. A stop block, often made from hardwood or aluminum key stock, is mounted perpendicular to the cut line to guide each cut.
Precision Drilling and Hardware Installation
To attach the adjustable fence, Jodee uses a drill press to bore clean, straight holes for the bolts and adjustment knobs. This step is essential to keep the hardware aligned and prevent binding during use.
Threaded inserts are added so the fence can be locked down or adjusted incrementally. These inserts make it easy to dial in exact spacing, especially when fine-tuning joints for a perfect fit.
Calibrating the Jig
Before cutting any project parts, Jodee tests the jig using scrap pieces. This allows him to verify that the width of each pin and socket matches the thickness of the material.
If the fit is too tight or too loose, small changes to the fence position can be made quickly. These test cuts save time and materials, helping ensure the final joints go together without issues.
Making Box Joints
Once the jig is calibrated, the cutting process is smooth and repeatable. The workpiece is aligned with the key stock and cut at evenly spaced intervals, then flipped and repeated for the mating board.
Jodee includes a backer board behind the workpiece to reduce tear-out. This is especially useful when working with softer or thinner materials, helping to preserve clean corners on each cut.

One of the best features of this jig is its small footprint. It can be stored easily and adapted for different projects, eliminating the need to build multiple jigs for various sizes.
The ability to switch between different joint widths—from small decorative boxes to large drawers—makes this jig especially useful in a small workshop.
