A Smarter Footprint for Two Essential Tools
The heart of this project is the flip-top mechanism. By mounting a planer on one side and a jointer on the other, Jason effectively doubles the use of a single footprint.
Instead of dedicating floor space to both machines, the top simply rotates to reveal the tool you need. When you’re finished, the cart can be tucked away under a bench, keeping the shop clean and open for other tasks.
Starting the Build: Cutting the Parts
Jason uses plywood as the core material for the build, chosen for its strength and stability. After breaking down the sheets, he cuts each panel to size using precision tools for tight, square joints.
To form the curved slots and notches required for the flip-top mechanism, he switches to a jigsaw and bandsaw. These components will later house the rotating section, so accuracy in the cut is essential.
Building a Strong Frame
Corner clamps and wood glue help hold the structure steady during assembly. Jason fastens the frame together with screws, carefully checking for squareness at each stage.
The height of the cart is based on the clearance needed under his workbench, and extra bracing is added to support the combined weight of both tools. Every decision is made with stability and safety in mind.
Installing the Flip Mechanism
At the center of the build is a black iron pipe used as a pivot point for the flip-top. Jason drills holes through the cart sides, then slides the pipe into place to allow smooth rotation of the tool platform.
To prevent the pipe from spinning during use, it’s locked in place with wooden supports. The flip-top rotates cleanly, giving easy access to either the planer or the jointer without needing to lift or move them.
Power and Cable Management
To streamline tool use, Jason integrates a power strip into the frame. This allows both tools to stay plugged in, so there’s no need to fumble with cords when flipping between machines.
Wiring is routed neatly through the cart to avoid tangling and reduce clutter. Cable management hooks are added to keep everything out of the way, which also improves safety during use.
Adding Drawers and Storage Features
One of the cart’s most helpful additions is the storage system. Jason installs drawers beneath the flip-top, giving him space to keep accessories, blades, and small tools organized and easy to reach.
The drawers are assembled using pocket screws and glue for added strength. Strap clamps help hold the boxes square during glue-up, keeping everything aligned during assembly.
Locking the Flip-Top in Place
To secure the top during use, Jason installs sash latches on both sides of the cart. These hold the platform firmly in place, preventing it from flipping accidentally when the tools are running.
A steel pin is added for an extra layer of protection. This backup safety measure ensures that even if the latches fail, the top stays locked and secure.
Final Setup and Testing
Before finishing the project, Jason tests both the planer and the jointer to confirm everything functions correctly. The flip mechanism works smoothly, and both tools operate without issue while mounted.
The cart rolls easily on casters, making it simple to move in and out of the workspace as needed. Once pushed under the workbench, it disappears from sight but remains ready for use.
