Build a Sliding Barn Door Bar

This project was designed and built by Chris from A Glimpse Inside. In this tutorial, you will learn how to make a stylish bar that can hold not one but two refrigerators, perfect for any home or entertainment space.

Materials Needed

  • 3/4 inch Baltic birch plywood
  • 1/4 inch plywood (for the back)
  • Hard maple (for trim and doors)
  • Wood glue
  • 3/4 inch Brad nails
  • Polyurethane (for finishing)
  • Stain (dark espresso color, Kona)
  • Furniture paste wax
  • Wood screws

Tools Required

  • Table saw
  • Miter saw
  • Router with flush trim bit
  • Brad nailer
  • Drill
  • Sander (120 grit sandpaper)
  • Shelf pin jig
  • Clamps

Step 1: Preparing the Plywood

Start by milling down your 3/4 inch Baltic birch plywood to the lengths you need for the cabinet. Tack the pieces in place to ensure everything stays square.

Step 2: Assembling the Cabinet

Once your plywood pieces are cut, tack on the middle piece and reinforce every joint with glue and screws. This will create a sturdy structure. You will need to make two units for this project.

Step 3: Adding the Back

Rip the 1/4 inch plywood to size and attach it as the back of the unit using 3/4 inch Brad nails. This will help in keeping the structure together while ensuring a clean look.

Step 4: Trimming the Edges

Trim the edges with hard maple to cover the plywood edges. Use the jointer for a perfect 90-degree edge before cutting the trim on the table saw.

Step 5: Assembling the Top

Cut pieces of 3/4 inch plywood for the top in a brick pattern. Make sure to stagger the pieces for a visually appealing design. Once satisfied, go ahead and glue and nail them in place.

Step 6: Sanding the Top

Use 120 grit sandpaper to sand the top edges, giving each piece a slight chamfer. This adds an organic look and a polished finish.

Step 7: Preparing the Barn Door Track

Mount the sliding barn door track onto the face frames. Ensure the track is secured and at the right height to accommodate the door hinges.

Step 8: Constructing the Barn Doors

Cut pieces of hard maple for the barn doors and assemble them using simple butt joints. Measure carefully to maintain the intended design.

Step 9: Adding Decorative X Detail

For an added touch, create an “X” design on the doors. Practice on a scrap piece first to ensure accuracy before cutting the expensive wood.

Step 10: Final Assembly

Attach the door locks and check that everything functions smoothly. Make adjustments as necessary to ensure the doors slide freely.

Step 11: Staining and Finishing

Apply a coat of dark espresso stain using a rag and chip brush, making sure to get into all the nooks and crannies. After allowing it to set, wipe off the excess stain.

Step 12: Applying Polyurethane

Finish with a coat of polyurethane for protection. Use a thin roller for the inside of the cabinets and a brush for the doors.

Step 13: Installing the Shelves

Cut and edge band two panels for the shelves. Use a shelf pin jig to ensure they are adjustable and fit correctly.

Step 14: Final Buffing and Clean Up

Once everything is assembled and dried, give the surfaces a good buffing to achieve a nice shine.
