Preparing Wood and Surfaces for Glue
Before any glue touches the wood, Clinton recommends checking the surface for shine. A glossy or slick surface usually means a finish is already present, which will prevent glue from soaking into the fibers and bonding properly. Sanding the area back to a dull finish first solves this problem and ensures a strong bond.
He also suggests keeping a slightly damp rag nearby for cleanup, since wiping away squeeze-out is far easier when the rag isn’t bone dry. The key is to wring out excess water so none of it seeps into the joint and weakens the glue.
For projects where visible wood grain matters, masking tape placed right along the seam before gluing can save a lot of sanding later. Once the glue dries, peeling away the tape often removes the bulk of the squeeze-out with it.
Choosing and Applying the Right Glue
Standard yellow or white glue can leave a visible line once dry, which is barely noticeable on light woods but can stand out on darker species like walnut or mahogany. Clinton points out that darker-toned wood glues exist specifically for these situations, blending in far better with rich, dark grain.
When it comes to spreading glue, silicone brushes are a favorite because dried glue simply peels off them for reuse. He shows how a basting brush from a discount store can be modified into a wider, more affordable alternative to store-bought silicone brushes. Old gift cards or business cards also work in a pinch for spreading glue across larger surfaces.
For bigger jobs like veneering a door, a foam roller or a bottle-mounted roller attachment can help spread glue quickly before it begins to set.
Getting Glue Into Cracks and Tight Joints
Small cracks or gaps can be tricky to fill evenly, but Clinton demonstrates three creative solutions. Dental floss can be worked into a glue-lined crack to push adhesive deep inside, while a vacuum can pull glue through a gap from the opposite side. A craft syringe with a blunt tip offers even more precision for injecting glue exactly where it’s needed.
To disguise a visible gap at a seam, mixing fine sawdust with glue creates a filler that blends into the surrounding wood once sanded smooth. This trick is especially useful for hiding seams without resorting to noticeable fillers or putty.
Improving Weak or Tricky Joints
End grain to end grain glue joints are naturally weaker than other types, but Clinton shares a method to strengthen them. Applying a first coat of glue and letting it soak into the end grain for several minutes allows the wood pores to absorb more adhesive before a second coat and clamping take place.
Preventing wood from sliding during clamping is another common frustration. Sprinkling a bit of table salt or scattering grit from rubbed-together sandpaper into the glue creates texture that helps pieces grip instead of slip once clamped.
Clamping Odd Shapes and Miters
Irregular or curved shapes often don’t fit well in traditional clamps. Wrapping multiple rubber bands around the piece can supply enough even pressure to hold things together while the glue cures.
For miter joints, like those found in picture frames or boxes, aligning the pieces face up and taping across the seam before flipping them over creates a hinge-like action that pulls the corner tight once glue is added. This simple trick makes it much easier to keep miters aligned without them sliding out of place.
When using pipe clamps on large panel glue-ups, placing tape or wax paper over the pipe protects the wood from discoloration caused by glue reacting with the metal.
Cleanup Tricks Worth Knowing
A silicone work mat makes cleanup after small glue-ups much easier, since dried glue peels away cleanly instead of sticking permanently to the workbench. For corner joints where squeeze-out pools into hard-to-reach spots, a plastic straw with one end pinched into a point can scoop out excess glue neatly.
Once squeeze-out has fully dried, Clinton recommends skipping the chisel in favor of a paint scraper. Its angled blade removes dried glue efficiently while reducing the risk of digging into the wood fibers the way a chisel sometimes can.
Storage, Shelf Life, and Temperature
Glue doesn’t last forever, and Clinton suggests writing the purchase date directly on the bottle since many containers don’t list a clear expiration. As a general rule, glue older than a couple of years should be replaced, especially if it has changed color, separated into layers, or turned chunky.
Storing bottles upside down in a cup keeps glue at the tip and ready to flow, saving time and effort during repetitive glue-ups. Temperature matters too, since glue and the wood being glued should stay well above freezing for a proper bond. A shop that dips into the high thirties, even briefly, can be enough to ruin a bottle of glue.
For woodworkers going through a lot of small bottles, buying a larger jug and refilling smaller containers can save money, but only if that larger amount actually gets used within a reasonable time. Clinton candidly points out that an unused three-year-old jug isn’t something he’d trust for an important project anymore.

These are my personal thoughts and tips based on my own experience in the shop. This section is not written, reviewed, or endorsed by the original creator of this project.
Glue is one of those things that seems dead simple until you start paying attention to how many variables actually affect the bond. A handful of these tips are worth burning into memory, especially the surface prep point. Any finish, wax, or even heavy dust on the wood will keep glue from soaking into the fibers, and that’s a big reason joints fail later even though everything looked fine at glue-up. A quick pass with 120 or 150 grit right before gluing solves this every time.
The end grain trick is one I’d flag as especially useful for beginners. End grain acts like a bundle of straws, soaking up glue fast and leaving a starved joint if you only apply one coat. Letting that first coat sink in for a few minutes before adding more and clamping makes a real difference in joint strength, particularly on furniture legs or anything load-bearing.
On the clamping side, don’t overlook how much a slipping joint can throw off alignment while you’re working against the clock. Painter’s tape, cauls, or even a strip of sandpaper between the clamp face and the wood can help keep things from creeping. And with pipe clamps, that black staining from glue reacting with steel is real — a strip of packing tape over the pipe is cheap insurance.
Lastly, treat glue shelf life seriously. Wood glue is a water-based emulsion, and once it starts separating or gets stringy, it’s not going to perform the way it should. If you’re not going through bottles quickly, buy smaller sizes rather than saving a few bucks on a jug that sits for years.
