Little free libraries have become a popular sight in neighborhoods everywhere, and this build shows how to make one from scratch using plywood, bead board siding, and a functioning shingled roof. The finished structure looks like a tiny house on a post, complete with a hinged door, a plexiglass window, and a shelf inside for holding books that visitors can take or leave. Jason built this one for his wife’s dance studio, but the design and techniques translate easily to a front yard, park, or community space.

Box Construction
The build starts with plywood panels for the front, back, sides, and bottom of the box. Jason used a track saw for rough cuts and a table saw to dial in final dimensions, taking extra care to get the bottom panel sized perfectly since it sits sandwiched between the side panels. Clamping scrap pieces to the table saw fence helped guarantee that fit was precise.
Since this library features an A-frame roof, the front and back panels needed angled peaks cut into them. Keeping the angle simple made the rest of the roof assembly much easier later on. An opening was also cut into the front panel using a jigsaw to create the access point for books.
Assembly followed a straightforward process of gluing, clamping, and tacking pieces together with brad nails before going back to secure everything permanently with countersunk screws. The interior shelf was installed using the same method, reinforced from multiple sides for extra durability. A thin strip of wood was added to the front edge of the shelf to hide the plywood’s end grain and give it a cleaner look.
Weatherproofing and Interior Finish
Because this library would live outdoors permanently, waterproofing was treated as a top priority throughout the build. Jason primed and painted the interior before installing the front panel, which made painting easier and more thorough. Any areas where glue joints would later go were taped off to avoid interference with adhesion.
Caulk played a major role in this build, sealing every corner, crack, and nail hole where water could potentially seep in. This kind of attention to detail is what separates an outdoor project that lasts for years from one that deteriorates quickly. A final coat of paint finished off the interior before moving on to the exterior structure.
Trim and Siding
Trim pieces were made from dimensional lumber, glued together into L-shaped corner pieces, then run back through the table saw to ensure even thickness on both sides. These corner pieces were mitered to match the roof’s pitch, allowing them to wrap neatly around the box on all four sides. Leftover trim off-cuts were repurposed for framing the door opening, set back slightly to double as both a door stop and a water barrier.
Bead board siding was added next, cut to fit between the trim pieces and installed with wood glue and brad nails. Rather than trying to perfectly angle the siding to match the roof peak, Jason installed it flush and then trimmed the excess afterward with a flush-cut hand saw. The tongue-and-groove design of the bead board made piecing multiple sections together on the front look seamless.
Once the siding was complete, the whole exterior was primed and painted using a paint sprayer for an even finish. Any remaining nail holes and gaps received another round of caulk before final paint coats were applied.
Door and Window
The door frame was built using half lap joints, cut by carefully adjusting the table saw blade height and running each piece through repeatedly. Corner clamps helped keep the frame square while the glue cured. Once assembled, a rabbet was routed along the back of the door to create a ledge for mounting plexiglass, while a decorative edge was routed into the front for visual appeal.
Plexiglass was cut to size on the table saw, with chiseled corners needed to compensate for the rounded edges left by the router. After painting the door, silicone was applied around the interior edge to seal in the plexiglass panel before screwing it permanently into place.
Roof Assembly
Because the roof pitch was set at a 45-degree angle, the peak formed a clean 90-degree joint, which simplified the plywood roof panel installation significantly. One panel was cut slightly longer than the other so they could overlap directly at the ridge without needing mitered joints. A small vent was added to the back of the roof to allow airflow inside the library and help prevent moisture buildup.
Fascia boards were cut and attached around the roofline using the same trim material from earlier in the build. A metal drip edge was installed as an added precaution against water intrusion, even though it wasn’t strictly necessary for the design.
Shingles were installed over roofing paper, staggered and overlapped to shed water effectively. Off-cuts were used for the ridge cap, and any remaining exposed nail heads were sealed with silicone for a clean, finished appearance.
Final Details and Installation
With the main structure complete, decorative surface mount hinges were used to hang the door, with playing cards used as spacers to achieve even gaps around the frame. A door pull and magnetic closure were added to keep the door secure and functional. A custom sign was cut on a CNC machine and attached to the front for a personalized touch.
Installation involved digging a hole, adding gravel for drainage, and setting a post reinforced with a mounting board to make attaching the library easier later. After the concrete cured, the post was painted and the surrounding area was cleaned up with stepping stones leading to the library. The final structure was leveled, centered, and securely fastened to the post from the inside.
Bringing the Library to Life
This build demonstrates how a fairly simple structure can be elevated into something both functional and visually appealing through careful attention to trim, painting, and roofing details. The waterproofing steps taken throughout are especially important for any project meant to live outdoors permanently, protecting the books inside from moisture damage. Once installed, Jason kicked things off by stocking the shelf with a few personal titles, giving the community library a meaningful start.

Matt’s Take
These are my personal thoughts and tips based on my own experience in the shop. This section is not written, reviewed, or endorsed by the original creator of this project.
Little free libraries are a great way to practice a bunch of skills in one small project—joinery, roofing, painting, even a little bit of trim carpentry—without the commitment of a full-size build. What stands out here is how much thought went into weatherproofing, since a lot of small outdoor projects fail not because of the woodworking but because water finds its way into every seam and crack over time. Priming before assembly and taping off glue joints is a smart habit worth stealing for any exterior project, not just this one.
If you’re taking this on yourself, don’t underestimate how much caulk and paint prep matters compared to the actual cutting and joinery. A cheap caulk will shrink and crack within a season or two outdoors, so it’s worth spending a little more on a paintable exterior-grade silicone or polyurethane caulk rated for weather exposure.
For the half-lap door frame, a stacked dado blade set can save a lot of time over repeated single-blade passes if you have one available, though the method shown works perfectly fine with patience. Just keep fingers clear and use a push stick when running narrow trim pieces past the blade—those thin strips are exactly the kind of workpiece that can get pulled in unexpectedly.
Lastly, that metal drip edge under the shingles is a small detail that’s easy to skip, but it’s cheap insurance against water creeping under the roofline over years of exposure. Little touches like that are often the difference between a project that looks good on day one and one that still looks good five years later.
