Step 1: Prepare the Wood

Start by gathering your hardwood scraps. Marie typically uses leftover floorboards from previous projects. In this case, she has walnut, cedar, cherry, and birch. First, plane down the backside of the floorboards to remove any grooves.

Step 2: Create the Epoxy Molds

Next, cut pieces of melamine board to create your epoxy molds. Marie made three molds measuring 18 by 4 inches. Cover each piece with sheathing tape to prevent the epoxy from sticking.

Step 3: Mix and Pour the Epoxy

For the first coaster set, Marie is using walnut with white epoxy. Measure out two parts A to one part B of the Chill clear epoxy, and mix thoroughly. Add white pigment for a rich color.

Step 4: Level the Mold

Before pouring, ensure your mold is level using shims. This prevents the epoxy from being uneven.

Step 5: Create All-Wood Coasters

If you’re not into epoxy, you can create all-wood coasters. Set your table saw fence to half an inch and cut your strips accordingly. Glue them together and clamp them overnight.

Step 6: Sand and Shape the Blanks

After the glue has dried, trim the excess and run the blanks through the planer to achieve a smooth finish. This will help you get the final thickness of around 3/8 of an inch.

Step 7: Cut the Hexagons

Using a hexagon cutting sled, cut your coasters into the desired hexagonal shape. Make sure to position your blanks correctly to avoid waste.

Step 8: Sand and Finish

Once your coasters are cut, sand the edges and clean off any sawdust using denatured alcohol. Finally, apply Osmo Polyx-oil for a beautiful finish that enhances the wood’s natural beauty.
