Step 1: Cut the Wood
Begin by cutting the oak wood to the required lengths using a miter saw. This forms the base structure of your spice rack. For exact measurements, refer to the woodworking plans provided by Making Manzanita.
Step 2: Drill Pocket Holes
Using the Kreg 720 Pro, drill pocket holes 1 inch from the edges of the wood pieces. This spacing is recommended for optimal strength and stability.
Step 3: Sand the Pieces
Lightly sand all pieces with an orbital sander, starting with 80 grit sandpaper and finishing with 150 grit. This ensures a smooth surface for assembly and finishing.
Step 4: Cut Square Dowels
Use a table saw to cut square dowel pieces from oak wood. These will serve as the front edge of the spice rack. A push block made from plywood can assist in this process.
Step 5: Cut Keyholes
Employ a router and keyhole slot bit to create keyholes on the back of the spice rack for easy wall mounting. Ensure the router is turned off before lifting the board after cutting.
Step 6: Assemble the Rack
Assemble the spice rack by connecting the edges using the pre-drilled pocket holes. Utilize Kreg 90-degree corner clamps for precise alignment.
Step 7: Attach the Hanger Board
Apply wood glue to the hanger board and attach it to the top of the spice rack. Secure it with clamps and finish nails for a sturdy fit.
Step 8: Apply Wood Filler and Sand
Fill any gaps and nail holes with wood filler. Once dry, sand the entire structure to achieve a smooth finish.
Step 9: Stain and Seal
Stain the spice rack using a Minwax special walnut stain for a beautiful contrast with your kitchen’s decor. Seal with an aerosol spray lacquer to protect the wood.
Step 10: Mount the Rack
Use painter’s tape to position the rack on the wall, ensuring it’s level. Drill holes and insert anchors before securing the rack with screws.
Step 11: Organize Your Spices
Fill your new spice jars and label them for easy identification. Arrange them on the rack, and enjoy your newly organized spice collection!
