Vertical Wall Mounted Fishing Rod Holder

If you’re looking to organize your fishing gear in style, you’re in the right place! This vertical wall-mounted fishing rod holder was designed by Adam Nelson from Charles James Design. Here are the steps to create your own.

Here’s a quick list of materials and tools you’ll need for this project:

  • Two sticks of wood (32 inches long, 2.5 inches wide)
  • 1 5/8 inch Forstner bit
  • Pocket hole kit
  • Drill
  • Band saw
  • Miter saw
  • Micro belt sander
  • Palm router with a roundover bit
  • Sandpaper (150 grit)
  • Rubio Monocoat oil
  • Leather circles (for inserts)
  • 2P-10 glue (two-part adhesive)

Step 1: Cut the Length

Start by measuring out and cutting your boards to a length of 32 inches. This will be the overall length of your rod holder, providing enough space to accommodate seven rods.

Step 2: Cut to Final Size and Sand

Next, cut the boards into 2.5-inch widths. After cutting, sand each edge with 150 grit sandpaper to eliminate any machining marks from the lumber.

Step 3: Measure Out Holes

Using a speed square, mark the center of your board (16 inches). From this center point, measure 4.5 inches on either side to mark your holes for the rods.

Step 4: Drill Your Holes

With the 1 5/8 inch Forstner bit, drill holes where you marked. Ensure the depth is only to the bottom of the material to avoid blowout.

Step 5: Mark Your Openings

For the second piece, mark your lines for the band saw. Use a speed square to set the angle for the cuts at 12 degrees and 5 degrees, which will give you a 0.5-inch cut-out for each hole.

Step 6: Clean Up Your Cuts

After cutting with the band saw, use the micro belt sander to smooth out the cuts. This will help achieve a cleaner finish.

Step 7: Miter Cut Your Tips

Use the miter saw to chop off a quarter inch from the tip of each hole to soften the edges and add a stylized touch.

Step 8: Round Over Your Edges

Utilize a palm router with a roundover bit to round over the edges that won’t be touching the wall for a polished look.

Step 9: Sand Your Pole Holes

Sand the insides of each pole hole to ensure they are smooth and won’t damage your rods.

Step 10: Drill Mounting Holes

Drill holes for mounting the rack to the wall. Use a pocket hole kit to create concealed holes for a clean look.

Step 11: Protect Your Rack

Apply Rubio Monocoat oil to protect the wood. Use a cotton rag to apply and wipe it off after a few minutes.

Step 12: Make and Install Leather Inserts

Cut leather circles to fit the holes. Use a template for accuracy. The leather will protect your rods and add a nice touch.

Final Touches

Use the 2P-10 glue to secure the leather inserts into the holes. Ensure adequate pressure is applied for a strong bond.

And there you have it! A beautifully crafted vertical wall-mounted fishing rod holder that not only organizes your rods but also showcases them.
