Starting with Disassembly
John begins by partially disassembling the console to prep it for paint. Hardware like hinges, knobs, and interior shelves are removed to make the refinishing process smoother.
Removing these parts helps create a cleaner final look. It also allows better access to corners and tight areas during sanding and painting.
Surface Prep and Sanding
Because the console is made from MDF, it has a factory-smooth finish that paint won’t easily stick to. Sanding helps rough up the surface so the new paint can bond properly.
John uses medium-grit sandpaper to remove any existing scuffs and imperfections. This step also helps even out any wear the console may have picked up over time.
Choosing a Bold Paint Color
For this project, John selects a rich tricorn black paint that gives the piece a modern and dramatic appearance. This deep color becomes a great base for highlighting new textures and hardware.
Two coats of paint are usually enough to achieve solid coverage. Applying thin, even layers helps avoid drips and keeps the finish clean.
Adding Cane-Style Door Accents
To add visual interest, John updates the cabinet doors with cane-style accents. Instead of traditional cane, he uses a fabric alternative called fiddler’s cloth for a similar effect.
This material is cut slightly larger than the openings in the door panels. Starting from the top center, each piece is stapled into place and stretched tight to avoid sagging.
This approach brings in texture and depth without increasing the cost or complexity of the build. It also gives the piece a handcrafted, custom look.
Reassembly and Hardware Upgrades
Once the paint is dry and the fabric is in place, the hardware is reinstalled. Keeping the original fasteners organized during disassembly makes this step easier.
Instead of reusing the original knobs, John chooses larger, more substantial hardware. This change instantly makes the console feel more upscale and adds a fresh design element.
Styling and Presentation
To finish the project, John stages the console in a living room setting. He uses a large statement piece on top and layers smaller items to create a balanced display.
The new black finish and cane accents pair well with neutral décor, allowing the piece to stand out without overwhelming the space. The styling highlights how this updated console can work in a variety of interiors.
