Looking to build some beautiful nightstands for your bedroom? This project was created by Steve Ramsey from Woodworking for Mere Mortals, and it’s perfect for both beginners and experienced woodworkers.
Materials Needed
- Cherry lumber
- Maple lumber
- Wood glue
- Pocket screws
- Half-inch plywood (for drawers)
- Quarter-inch plywood (for drawer bottoms)
Tools Required
- Table saw
- Drill press
- Router with chamfer bit
- Jigsaw
- Clamps
- Screwdriver
Step 1: Prepare the Legs
To start, you’ll want to cut all eight legs from a single eight-foot long board. Each leg will be approximately 24 inches long, but consider the kerf of the saw, which may reduce the length slightly. Aim for about 23.5 inches after cutting.
Step 2: Glue Up the Panels
While the legs are drying, move on to the cherry lumber to create the top and lower panels for each nightstand. Ensure that you joint one edge of the boards for a perfect fit when edge joining.
Step 3: Arrange and Glue the Panels
Once you have your boards, arrange them to find the best grain pattern. Apply glue to the edges and use clamps to hold the panels together while they dry. It’s crucial to ensure that you don’t over-tighten the clamps as this can cause the panels to buckle.
Step 4: Cut the Legs to Size
After the glue has dried, cut the maple boards into one-inch wide pieces to form the legs. Make sure to sand down any burn marks caused during cutting.
Step 5: Assemble the Frame
Now it’s time to cut out all the apron and framing pieces. Use pocket screws to join the frame pieces together. Make sure to drill counterbore holes to hide the screws for a cleaner look.
Step 6: Join the Side Assemblies
Assemble the two side frames using clamps for alignment. Ensure that everything is square before securing with screws.
Step 7: Fit the Lower Shelf
Cut the lower panel to fit inside the frame and create notches for the legs. Test the fit to ensure it’s snug.
Step 8: Attach the Top
Attach the top of the nightstand using screws, allowing for wood movement by not tightening too much.
Step 9: Create the Drawers
For the drawers, use half-inch plywood for the sides and quarter-inch for the bottoms. Join the sides using rabbet joints for added strength.
Step 10: Final Assembly and Finishing Touches
Once the drawers are assembled, attach the drawer faces and finish with a clear coat of spray lacquer. The cherry wood will darken beautifully over time.
