This easy DIY planter box was created by The Rehab Life, and it’s a fantastic addition to any home.
Here’s a basic list of materials and tools you’ll need:
- Standard pine boards
- Trim head screws
- Wood filler
- Exterior stain
- Sanding block
- Miter saw
- Drill and impact driver
- Tape measure
- Safety goggles
- Ear protection
- Mask
Step 1: Measure and Cut Your Wood
The first step is to measure the space where you want your window box to go. Cut your pine boards to the desired length and height. Make sure to account for any trim you may want to add later.
Step 2: Assemble the Box
Once your pieces are cut, it’s time to assemble the box. Use trim head screws to secure the sides to the bottom piece. Make sure to drill pilot holes first to prevent the wood from splitting.
Step 3: Fill Any Gaps
After assembling the box, use wood filler to fill in any gaps or screw holes. This will give your planter box a clean finish. Let the filler dry completely before moving on to the next step.
Step 4: Sand the Edges
Once the wood filler is dry, use a sanding block to smooth out the edges of your planter box. This will help prevent splinters and give your box a polished look.
Step 5: Stain the Wood
Next, apply your chosen exterior stain to protect the wood from the elements. Make sure to cover all surfaces for maximum durability.
Step 6: Drill Drainage Holes
To ensure your plants have proper drainage, drill holes in the bottom of the planter. This will prevent water from accumulating and harming your plants.
Step 7: Final Assembly
After your box is stained and the drainage holes are drilled, it’s time for final assembly. If you want to add any decorative trim, now is the time to do so.
Step 8: Install Your Planter Box
Finally, install your planter box under your window. You can use brackets or screws to secure it in place. Make sure it’s level for the best appearance.
