Building DIY Mudroom Lockers with Storage

This project is by Charleston Crafted. This DIY project is not only budget-friendly but also allows you to add a personal touch to your home decor.

By following these steps, you can transform your mudroom into a beautiful and functional space that can accommodate all your storage needs.

Step 1: Prepare Your Space

Before diving into the project, it’s essential to prepare your workspace. Start by clearing out the mudroom area and removing any existing furniture or clutter. This will give you a clean slate to work on and make the installation process smoother.

Step 2: Cut the Shiplap

The first step in the actual construction is cutting the shiplap. The goal is to mirror the beautiful shiplap wall around your fireplace. Measure and cut the shiplap boards to the correct lengths. Ensure that you have enough pieces to cover the entire area where the lockers will be installed.

Step 3: Remove Old Baseboards and Crown Molding

Next, remove the old baseboards and quarter round from the wall. This step also includes cutting the baseboards on the sides and removing any crown molding at the top. This ensures that the new shiplap will fit snugly against the wall.

Step 4: Attach the Shiplap

Once the old materials are removed, it’s time to attach the shiplap boards. These boards are tongue and groove, making them easy to fit together. Start from the bottom and work your way up, ensuring that each board is level and securely nailed in place.

Step 5: Paint the Shiplap

After the shiplap is installed, the next step is painting. Using a paint sprayer makes this process quicker and more efficient than hand-rolling. Make sure to cover all the boards evenly for a consistent finish.

Step 6: Prepare to Build the Lockers

With the shiplap painted and dried, it’s time to prepare for building the lockers. This project will primarily use three-quarter-inch plywood. Start by making all necessary cuts and drilling pocket holes using a Kreg jig, which simplifies the process considerably.

Step 7: Assemble the Shoe Cubbies

Begin the assembly by constructing the shoe cubbies. Use wood glue and pocket hole screws to secure the pieces together. Ensure that everything is centered and squared from the start, as this will affect the overall look of the finished product.

Step 8: Install the Locker Dividers

After the shoe cubbies are assembled, it’s time to add the locker dividers. These boards will create sections for storing coats and other items. Ensure that they are securely fastened and in alignment with the cubbies.

Step 10: Prepare the Bench Seat

For the bench seat, visit a local store to purchase butcher block countertops. Cut these down to the required size, then sand and apply a protective finish like walrus oil. This will enhance the wood’s natural beauty and protect it from wear.

Step 12: Secure Everything in Place

To ensure stability, install boards against the walls to anchor everything in place. This will help prevent any wobbling or shifting of the lockers once everything is fully assembled.

Step 13: Add Hardwood Trim

To give the lockers a finished look, add hardwood trim around the edges. This will cover any plywood edges and enhance the overall appearance of the lockers.
