Sleek DIY Floating Shelves

Looking to make the most of a weird nook space in your home? This floating shelf project was created by Anika from Anika’s DIY Life, and it’s a perfect way to add style and functionality to any room.

Materials Needed:

  • 1×2 boards (or 1×12 boards ripped down to size)
  • Plywood for the shelf surface
  • Toggle bolts
  • Finish nails
  • Wood glue (optional)
  • Wood stain and finish (optional)

Tools Required:

  • Power drill/driver
  • Miter saw
  • Table saw (if using 1×12 boards)
  • Jigsaw
  • Level
  • Measuring tape
  • Painter’s tape

Step 1: Measure and Mark the Nook

Begin by measuring your nook to determine where you want to place the shelves. Use painter’s tape to visualize the shelf locations on the wall. This will help you ensure that they are aligned and level.

Step 2: Create the Shelf Frames

Cut your 1×2 boards to size for the shelf frames. If you’re using 1×12 boards, rip them down to the desired width. Use a miter saw for precise cuts.

Step 3: Prepare for Installation

Since there may not be studs in the right places, you will need to use toggle bolts to secure the shelves. Start by making pilot holes in the 1×2 boards. Then, position the boards on the wall and drill through into the wall.

Step 4: Install the Toggle Bolts

Drill holes in the wall to accommodate the toggle bolts. Although it may feel intimidating to make larger holes, this is necessary to insert the toggle bolts securely. Tighten the bolts to ensure the shelf frames are level.

Step 5: Add Additional Support

For added strength, especially if you plan to store heavier items, install a center support. This can be done using pocket holes and screws to attach a 1×2 board to the sides of the shelf frames.

Step 6: Create a Template for the Shelf Surface

To ensure a snug fit, create a template using paper. Trace the shape of the shelf onto the paper, then transfer this shape onto your plywood. Cut out the plywood using a jigsaw for a precise fit.

Step 7: Attach the Shelf Surface

Once the plywood is cut to fit, attach it to the shelf frames using finish nails. Ensure everything is aligned and secure.

Step 8: Finish the Shelves

Finally, finish your shelves with wood stain and a top coat if desired. Once dry, your shelves are ready to use!
