Rustic TV Stand

Looking for a stylish and functional TV stand that you can build yourself? This DIY rustic TV stand project was created by DesignedByTaylor. In this guide, you’ll learn how to create a beautiful rustic TV stand that will enhance your living space.

Materials and Tools

  • 2×2 lumber
  • 2×6 lumber
  • Pocket hole screws (2.5 inches)
  • Wood glue
  • Wood stain (Verithane dark walnut recommended)
  • Pre-stain conditioner
  • Flat white paint
  • Marking knife
  • Miter saw
  • Kreg pocket hole jig
  • Drill
  • Sander (80, 150, and 220 grit sandpaper)

Step 1: Cut Your Wood Pieces

The first step is to cut all your pieces to length. For more accuracy, use a marking knife instead of a pencil. It’s essential to account for the blade thickness or kerf when making cuts. Typically, saw blades are about 1/8 inch to 1/4 inch thick, so make sure to cut to the right or left of your line as needed.

Step 2: Make Angled Cuts

For this project, you need to make four pieces with a 30-degree angle on either side. Start by changing your miter saw angle to 45 degrees and cut a scrap piece of wood. Then adjust your saw guide to 15 degrees to achieve the 30-degree angle on your work pieces. Repeat this process four times.

Step 3: Create Notches for Assembly

Create a notch in each piece at a 60-degree angle so they fit together to form an X. Adjust your depth stop to the center width of the board, mark the center, and then make two cuts on the outer lines. Use a saw blade to notch out the rest by making repeated cuts.

Step 4: Assemble the Legs

Lay out the pieces that make up one of the legs. Use a Kreg pocket hole jig to create pocket holes for a strong joint. Drill the holes and secure the pieces with 2.5-inch pocket hole screws. You might need a right-angle drilling attachment for hard-to-reach areas.

Step 5: Secure the Frame

Once the legs are done, repeat the process to create another identical leg. Lay everything on the table in the correct order and drill pocket holes into all connecting 2×2 boards to secure them to the main supports.

Step 6: Create the Inner Shelving

Gather your 2×6 boards and drill eight pocket holes on the inner side of one piece to secure them together. Repeat this for another identical piece. Then, secure the middle shelf to the frame using the previously drilled pocket holes.

Step 7: Install the Bottom Shelf

Once the middle shelf is in place, drill pocket holes into another four 2×2 pieces and install them onto the frame. Secure the bottom shelf in place with pocket holes as well.

Step 8: Prepare the Top Piece

Make the top piece by drilling pocket holes into the two outer pieces facing inward and secure them together with screws. Sand down the top piece with 80, 150, and then 220 grit sandpaper for a smooth finish.

Step 9: Finish the Wood

After sanding, apply two coats of flat white paint to the bottom piece. For the top, use a pre-stain conditioner before applying the dark walnut stain. Apply the stain with a foam brush and wipe off the excess.

Step 10: Final Assembly

After letting everything dry for 24 hours, secure the top piece to the base with the pocket holes made earlier. Your rustic TV stand is now complete!
