Pull-Out Storage Drawers Under Stairs

Neil Lovegrove created an innovative solution for maximizing storage space under stairs by building pull-out storage drawers. This project is perfect for anyone looking to declutter their home and organize their belongings effectively.

Materials and Tools Needed

  • Plywood
  • MDF for drawer fronts
  • Drawer runners (800mm, capable of holding up to 80kg)
  • Wood screws
  • Wood glue
  • Hot glue
  • Water-based matte paint
  • Varnish with stain
  • Angle finder
  • Table saw
  • Handheld circular saw
  • Drill
  • Clamps
  • L brackets
  • Double-sided tape

Step 1: Create the Frame

The first step in the project was constructing a sturdy frame to hold the drawers. Neil fixed the frame to the floor and the wall using screws and L brackets for additional support, ensuring that everything was square and stable.

Step 2: Cut Out the Wall

Next, Neil needed to cut out a section of the wall to allow access to the new storage drawers. He started by drilling a hole, then used a hand saw to finish the cut.

Step 3: Install the Drawer Runners

Neil selected heavy-duty drawer runners that could extend 800mm and support up to 80kg. He installed the first runner and adjusted it to the correct position before securing it in place.

Step 4: Build the Drawers

Using a 3D model, Neil calculated the size of the drawers and how many sheets of wood would be needed. He cut the plywood to size using a table saw and an angle finder to match the slope of the stairs.

Step 5: Assemble the Drawers

After checking the fit, Neil clamped the bases together and used quick-release mechanisms on the runners to secure the drawers. He utilized MDF for the front plates, which he cut down to size using a handheld circular saw.

Step 6: Finish the Drawer Fronts

To achieve a clean look, Neil applied edge banding to cover the plywood edges and used a water-based matte paint for a polished finish. He also used a varnish with a stain to match the existing flooring in his home.

Step 7: Install the Latch Mechanism

For the final touch, Neil installed a mechanical latch to keep the drawers securely closed. He attached it to a piece of wood and used double-sided tape for positioning before finalizing the screws.

With the pull-out storage drawers completed, Neil transformed a cluttered space into an organized storage solution. This project not only maximizes the use of space but also adds functionality to the area under the stairs.
