Pallet Wood Serving Tray

This rustic pallet wood serving tray was created by Uncle Knackers from the DIY For Knuckleheads, and it’s a great way to use up old scrap wood while adding a stylish touch to your home.

Materials Needed:

  • 1 old pallet
  • Wood glue
  • Finishing nails
  • Clear satin varnish
  • Handles (repurposed or new)

  • Circular saw
  • Biscuit joiner
  • Clamps
  • Screwdriver
  • Sander
  • Jigsaw

Step 1: Dismantle the Pallet

The first thing you’ll want to do is dismantle the old pallet. This step is crucial as you’ll need usable wood for your tray.

Step 2: Cut the Wood to Size

Once you have your pallet wood, it’s time to cut it to size. Make sure to measure carefully to ensure all pieces are straight and even.

Now it’s time to assemble your tray base. Number the boards to keep track of their order, and use a biscuit joiner to create joints.

After aligning the boards, apply glue into the biscuit slots, insert the biscuits, and clamp the boards together. Wipe off any excess glue.

Once the glue has dried (typically 24 hours), remove the clamps and cut the tray to its final dimensions.

Next, cut and attach the sides of the tray using wood glue and finishing nails. Ensure everything is flush and secure.

Step 7: Cut Holes for Wine Bottles and Glasses

To make your serving tray functional, cut a hole for a wine bottle and a slot for glasses. This adds a unique flair to your design.

Once everything is assembled, give your tray a good sanding to smooth out the edges. Then, finish it off with a couple of coats of clear satin varnish for a beautiful sheen.
