Why Build Overhead Storage Shelves?
Overhead storage shelves make use of wasted space while keeping tools and supplies off the floor. The addition of sliding doors ensures that everything stays dust-free and out of sight. This design is both practical and stylish, making it a great project for any garage or workshop.
The Structure of the Shelves
Jesse designed these shelves using standard dimensional lumber, making it easy to source materials. The main components include two-by-fours for the frame, plywood for the shelves and doors, and simple hardware for secure installation. The design can be adjusted to fit any space, whether above a garage door or along a workshop wall.
Preparing the Materials
Jesse starts by cutting the two-by-fours to length, ensuring they fit the available space. Planing the boards helps create a more polished look by removing the rounded edges, but this step is optional. Once the boards are ready, he cuts a dado along the edge to create grooves that will hold the sliding doors.
Testing the groove width with a piece of quarter-inch plywood ensures a proper fit. A snug but smooth sliding motion allows the doors to open and close easily.
Assembling the Framework
Before installing the shelves, Jesse measures the space to determine the ideal height. It’s important to account for clearance, especially if the shelves are positioned above a garage door. A horizontal support board is attached to the wall using sturdy screws, forming the main base for the shelves.
Next, vertical supports are added to distribute weight evenly and provide stability. Horizontal braces connect the supports, forming a rigid frame that will hold the shelves securely. Pocket hole joinery ensures strong connections between the pieces.
Installing the Shelves and Sliding Doors
Once the frame is complete, Jesse cuts plywood panels to size and fits them onto the shelves. Securing the plywood with screws keeps the surface stable and flush with the edges. The sliding doors are then cut to match the opening width, allowing them to slide behind the vertical supports.
To make the doors easier to open, Jesse drills small finger holes on each side. A quick test ensures they glide smoothly along the grooves without sticking.
Final Touches for a Finished Look
For a clean and polished appearance, Jesse adds trim around the edges of the shelves. This step hides exposed plywood edges and gives the project a more finished look. A coat of paint or stain completes the build, matching the shelves to the rest of the garage or workshop decor.
The Benefits of Overhead Storage
These storage shelves offer a practical way to organize tools, seasonal items, and supplies while keeping the space uncluttered. The sliding doors add convenience by protecting stored items from dust and giving the area a tidy look. With strong construction and a simple design, this project is a great way to improve any workspace.
