Materials and Tools Needed:
- 10 – 2×4 lumber
- 2 – 2×6 lumber
- 1 sheet of 1/2″ plywood
- 1 sheet of 1/4″ plywood
- 3″ screws
- 2″ screws
- Drill
- Table saw
- Miter saw
- Track saw
- Nail gun (optional)
Step 1: Prepare Your Materials
Start by running your dimensional 2x4s through a planer to remove the rounded edges for a more finished look. Next, cut one half of an inch off the width of two 2x4s using a table saw.
Step 2: Create Grooves for the Sliding Doors
Set your table saw blade to half an inch high and cut grooves down one edge of the two 2x4s. Repeat this for the opposite face to create the dados that will hold the sliding doors.
Step 3: Measure and Attach the Shelves
Measure the area above your garage door to ensure the bottom of the shelves will be at least 29 inches from the ceiling, allowing the garage door to open freely. Use 3-inch screws to attach the first board to the wall.
Step 4: Secure the Vertical Supports
Cut four 29-inch long pieces from the 2x4s for vertical supports, attaching them to the ends of the board secured to the ceiling with 3-inch screws.
Step 5: Install the Bottom and Top Boards
Attach the board with dados for the doors to the bottom and then the second board to the top of the vertical supports. Ensure that the boards are evenly spaced for the sliding doors.
Step 6: Create the Shelf Floor
Cut a piece of 3/4″ plywood to size for the floor of your shelves. Slide it into place and secure it with 2-inch screws.
Step 7: Cut and Install the Sliding Doors
Measure the width for your doors and cut the quarter-inch plywood accordingly. Drill finger holes for easy access and slide the doors into place.
Step 8: Frame the Ends for a Finished Look
Frame the ends of the shelves using 2x6s and 2x4s to give it a polished appearance. Once complete, your overhead storage shelves are ready to be filled!
With these simple steps, you can create functional and stylish overhead storage shelves that help declutter your space.
