Outdoor Plant Stand

This design was built and created by Woodshop Mike, and it’s perfect for anyone wanting to add a touch of greenery to their outdoor space. This guide will walk you through the steps to create a durable and attractive plant stand.

Materials and Tools Needed

  • Pressure treated 2x2s
  • Pressure treated 1x2s
  • 2-inch pocket hole screws
  • Stainless steel or blue coat screws (for exterior use)
  • Wood stain (optional)
  • Circular saw
  • Drill
  • Kreg pocket hole jig
  • Clamps
  • Measuring tape
  • Square

Step 1: Cutting the Wood

Start by cutting your 2x2s and 1x2s to the desired lengths. For the front legs, you’ll need to make a long tapered cut. Use the Kreg cross cut station for this. Here’s a pro tip: when cutting multiple pieces, clamp them together and trim one end before measuring and cutting the rest.

Step 2: Drilling Pocket Holes

Next, set up your pocket hole jig. For the 2x2s, use the jig for one and a half inch material, while changing it to three-quarter inch for the 1x2s. This will allow you to use the appropriate screws to secure the pieces together.

Step 3: Assembling the Frame

Assemble the frame by attaching the slats to the back and sides. Ensure everything is square by measuring across the corners. Once the frame is assembled, attach the slats using spacers to maintain even spacing.

Step 4: Preparing for Finish

Before applying the finish, head outside to work on flat pieces. This will make it easier to stain and ensure an even application. Let the stain dry overnight before moving on to assembly.

Step 5: Final Assembly

For the final assembly, use clamps to hold the shelves in place while you secure them with screws. Make sure to double-check your measurements to ensure everything is aligned properly.

Step 6: Adding Finishing Touches

To give your plant stand a polished look, cut some plugs to fill in the counter bored holes. This ensures that no water collects in the holes over time. Use exterior-grade glue to secure these plugs in place.

Adding finishing touches to the plant stand

And there you have it! A beautiful outdoor plant stand that’s not only functional but also enhances your outdoor space.
