One Board, One Tool: Three Unique Woodworking Projects

In this woodworking challenge, Billy from the Newton Makes takes a single board and transforms it into 3 distinct projects using only one tool: the scroll saw. This endeavor not only showcases the versatility of the scroll saw but also encourages woodworkers to think outside the box.

Materials and Tools Needed

  • 1 Board (approximately 6.75 inches wide, 30 inches long, and 0.75 inches thick)
  • Scroll saw
  • Small scroll saw blades
  • Wood glue
  • Sandpaper
  • Clamps
  • Optional: dowel for stacking coasters

Step 1: Creating Puzzle Coaster Pieces

The first project is a set of puzzle pieces that will function as coasters. The idea is to allow each piece to connect, creating a larger serving platter.

Puzzle pieces laid out for cutting

Newton lays out the puzzle pieces for optimal material usage, ensuring that the pieces fit together well. After cutting out the shapes, he faces the challenge of creating interior circles in each handle.

Cutting interior circles in the puzzle pieces

Using the smallest blade available, he carefully cuts the interior circles and clamps them to dry. This step is crucial for maintaining the integrity of the piece while ensuring the holes are clean.

Step 2: Crafting Candle Holders

For the second project, Newton decides to create candle holders. Typically, a drill would be used to create a deep hole for the candle, but since he is limited to the scroll saw, he has to improvise.

Cutting the shape for the candle holder

He cuts out the outer shape of the candle holder and then plans to cut a circle in the middle. To achieve this, he cuts with the grain and removes the circle, then glues the piece back together to form the holder.

This method keeps the project challenging while allowing for creativity in design. He emphasizes the importance of using sandpaper for finishing since he cannot use a power sander.

Step 3: Final Project – Wine Glass Holder

The final project is a wine glass holder, designed to be both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Newton uses the same principles as before, cutting with the grain and masking the cuts to maintain a seamless look.

He carefully glues the pieces together, ensuring that the cuts are not visible. This project, like the others, showcases how one board can yield multiple unique items with a single tool.

Final products showcasing the three projects

Through this challenge, Newton successfully demonstrates the endless possibilities of woodworking with just a scroll saw. Each project not only serves a purpose but also acts as a testament to creativity and resourcefulness in woodworking.

With these steps, woodworkers of all skill levels can try their hand at creating functional art pieces using a single board and a scroll saw. Newton encourages everyone to get into their shops and build something amazing!
