This minimalist nightstand was created by Josh Wright from Josh Wright Woodworking, and it’s a good addition to a bedroom. Made from just one 2×6, this project is perfect for beginners and can be completed in a few hours.
Materials Needed:
- 1 – 2×6 board (8 feet long)
- Wood glue
- Wood screws
- Sandpaper (various grits)
Tools Required:
- Table saw or circular saw
- Drill
- Clamps
- Measuring tape
- Pencil
Step 1: Cut the Legs and Frame
Start by cutting a 28-inch section from the 2×6. This will be used for the legs and frame of the nightstand.
Step 2: Create the Frame Pieces
Next, rip the 28-inch section into five 1-inch strips. Measure and cut all necessary pieces for the frame.
Step 3: Cut the Joints
With all frame pieces cut, begin cutting the joints. For this project, bridle joints are used to hold everything together.
Step 4: Make the Top
Now, move on to the top of the nightstand. Cut two 18-inch sections from the remaining wood.
Step 5: Shape the Top Pieces
Rip the two sections to 3.5 inches wide, making sure to keep the offcuts for later use. Resaw the sections down the middle and edge glue the four pieces together to form the final size of the top.
Step 6: Create Quarter-Inch Paneling
Using the offcuts from the top, glue them together to create a quarter-inch panel which will fill out the frame.
Step 7: Start Assembling
With the top and paneling ready, start partially assembling the nightstand. You will need to make the back of the nightstand next.
Step 8: Build the Drawer
Next, focus on the drawer. Using the remaining wood from the 2×6, cut out the necessary pieces for the drawer.
Step 9: Assemble the Drawer
Cut the drawer sides and back, and use rabbits to joint everything together. Ensure that the drawer slides smoothly.
Step 10: Finish the Nightstand
Finally, use the remaining paneling to finish making the back of the nightstand and install the drawer slides. Once everything is assembled, sand the edges and surfaces for a smooth finish.
And there you have it! A beautiful and functional nightstand made from just one 2×6. This project not only saves money but also allows you to showcase your woodworking skills.
