A Stylish and Functional Outdoor Project
Johnny designed this modern planter box to be both durable and visually appealing. By combining cedar wood with steel, the build offers a sleek, contemporary look while maintaining long-lasting strength. Over time, both materials age beautifully, making this planter a great addition to any outdoor space.
Preparing Materials for the Build
Johnny starts by cutting the cedar boards into sections for the panels. He uses a combination of 1x4s, 1x2s, and pressure-treated pine 2x6s to create a sturdy structure. While a circular saw can work for this step, a miter saw with a stop block ensures precise, repeatable cuts.
Constructing the Planter Panels
To form the side panels, Johnny spaces the cedar boards evenly using 1×2 pieces as supports. These spacers ensure clean, uniform gaps between the boards, giving the planter a modern and structured appearance. Using glue and brad nails, he secures the 1x2s to the 1x4s, keeping the rough face of the boards on the inside.
Once assembled, the panels are reinforced with screws for additional strength. This step is especially important for an outdoor planter, as it will need to withstand soil weight and weather conditions.
Strengthening the Long Panels
The longer sides of the planter require extra support to prevent bowing. Johnny installs a central upright support, which keeps the panels from flexing under the pressure of soil and plants. By ensuring all 1×2 pieces align at the top, the design remains clean and cohesive.
Assembling the Planter Box
With all panels complete, Johnny begins assembling the planter box. The interlocking design of the 1x2s at the corners creates a strong connection, similar to a lock rabbet joint. To maintain alignment, he rests the top edge of the planter on his workbench while securing the panels.
Clamps hold the structure in place while two-inch screws fasten the short and long side panels together. Initially, only one screw is added at each corner, allowing for adjustments before fully tightening everything.
Installing the Bottom and Drainage
The base of the planter is constructed from pressure-treated 2×6 boards. After cutting the boards to size, Johnny drills pocket holes at each end for attachment. Clamping the boards in place while securing them with screws ensures a tight fit.
For proper drainage, he spaces the bottom boards slightly apart. This prevents water from pooling and keeps the planter functional for long-term use.
Adding Trim for a Finished Look
Johnny sands the edges flush before attaching trim pieces around the top border. He cuts the trim at 45-degree angles with a miter saw, creating a seamless frame that gives the planter a polished appearance. Using glue and brad nails, he secures the trim while ensuring the edges remain smooth and level.
Preparing the Planter for Soil
Before filling the planter, Johnny lines the bottom with galvanized steel mesh to keep soil from falling through the drainage gaps. He cuts the mesh to size and staples it securely in place. To further protect the wood, he lines the interior with plastic, carefully punching drainage holes to allow excess water to escape.
Creating and Attaching the Legs
The planter’s legs are made from two-inch angle iron, adding a modern industrial touch. Johnny cuts the metal to length and drills holes for attachment, using a drill press for accuracy. He then paints the legs with flat black enamel, giving them a sleek, finished look.
Once dry, the legs are secured to the planter using construction adhesive and screws. Pre-drilling helps prevent splitting the wood while ensuring a strong attachment.
The Finished Planter Box
With the final assembly complete, the planter is ready for soil and plants. The combination of cedar and steel provides a striking contrast, making this piece a standout addition to any outdoor space. Its elevated design also makes gardening more accessible and convenient.
