Step 1: Planning and Measurements
To start off, we’ll base our chair measurements on a pre-existing chair. The seat will be a comfortable 19 inches by 19 inches. For the front and back sections of the seat, cut two pieces at 19 inches.
Step 2: Cutting the Side Sections
Next, cut the side sections of the seat base to 16 inches. This accounts for the thickness of the wood when putting the pieces together.
Step 3: Preparing the Slats
Now, cut three slats for the seat, each measuring 16 inches. This will provide the support needed for the seat base.
Step 4: Constructing the Back Section
For the back section, we want a slight slope. Set your miter saw to a 15-degree angle and cut the back pieces accordingly.
Step 5: Cutting the Legs
For the front legs, cut two pieces at 19.5 inches. The back legs will require a bit of math using the Pythagorean theorem for precise measurements.
Step 6: Sanding the Wood
Sand all cut edges with 120 grit sandpaper to ensure smooth surfaces, making it comfortable for sitting.
Step 7: Assembling the Chair
Using pocket hole screws, begin assembling the seat frame by attaching the front and back pieces to the side sections. This is where your chair starts to take shape!
Step 8: Attaching the Backrest
Now it’s time to attach the backrest. Ensure it’s securely fastened to provide support when leaning back.
Step 9: Adding the Slats
Finally, attach the seat slats to the frame, ensuring they are evenly spaced for comfort and aesthetics.
Step 10: Finishing Touches
To finish, apply a coat of stain to protect the wood and enhance its appearance. We used Pinebark by Valspar for a rich finish.
