Modern Retractable Dog / Baby Gate

This modern retractable dog gate project was designed and built by Danny from ModernRemade.

Materials Needed:

  • Wood for the gate (specific types can vary based on preference)
  • Wood glue
  • Pin nails
  • Hinges
  • Wood filler
  • Finish of choice (stain, paint, etc.)

Tools Required:

  • Table saw
  • Miter saw
  • Router
  • Drill
  • Sander
  • Stop blocks
  • Jig for tongue and groove joints

Step 1: Prepare Your Materials

Start by breaking down your material using a table saw. Utilize stop blocks to ensure your strips are trimmed down to the correct size, then switch to the miter saw for precise cuts.

Step 2: Create Tongue and Groove Joints

Using tongue and groove joints will help align the smaller pieces efficiently. Danny created a jig to assist with this process, which is especially useful for matching the grooves. If you don’t have a router table like Danny, don’t worry; you can still achieve great results with careful cutting.

Step 3: Cut the Slats

Next, you’ll need to cut out the slats for the gate. For this project, 42 slats were made, which will create a beautiful and functional barrier.

Step 4: Assemble the Panels

With a bit of glue and pin nails, the panels come together quickly. This part of the project is satisfying as you see the structure of the gate forming. Just remember to apply even pressure while cutting to avoid any cleanup later on.

Step 5: Sanding and Routing

After assembly, take time to sand and route the edges. This step enhances the overall look and feel of your project, giving it a professional finish.

Step 6: Add Hinges

Now it’s time to attach the hinges. Make sure to set the depth of your router slightly deeper than the hinge thickness for a perfect fit. Each panel requires hinges on both sides, except for the outer pair. This is a crucial step, so take your time to ensure everything is aligned correctly.

Step 7: Address Mistakes

As with any project, mistakes can happen. Danny demonstrates that it’s okay to make errors and how to fix them. In woodworking, learning from mishaps is part of the journey, so don’t be discouraged!

Step 8: Apply Wood Filler

Using wood filler to match the color grain is essential for a seamless look. After letting it dry, sand it down again to ensure everything is flush and smooth.

Step 9: Final Touches

After sanding, you can apply your choice of finish. This step is crucial as it not only protects the wood but also enhances its appearance. Choose a stain or paint that complements your home decor.
