Gathering Materials and Tools
The main structure of the bed is built from pine boards and plywood, all easily sourced from local home centers. Acrylic panels and an LED light strip complete the design, bringing a modern touch to the headboard.
Basic woodworking tools like a circular saw, speed square, pocket hole jig, and orbital sander are used throughout the build. While dimensions can be adjusted to fit different spaces, the building process remains the same.
Preparing the Wood for the Frame
The project starts by cutting down thick pine boards to form the platform frame. Since store-bought boards often have rounded edges, Jonny trims them to create flat, clean lines for tighter joints.
After squaring up the boards, the foundation pieces are cut and planed to size. Pocket holes are drilled along the boards’ edges, allowing them to join seamlessly during assembly without visible screws.
Assembling the Platform Base
Assembly begins by clamping the platform pieces together and checking alignment with a speed square. Pocket screws are driven in carefully, securing the frame without shifting the structure.
Once the frame is assembled, it’s flipped over and sanded smooth. Using an orbital sander ensures an even finish and highlights any minor imperfections that can be fixed before moving forward.
Crafting the Headboard
The headboard is built from a large sheet of plywood, cut to match the width of the platform. Pine boards are ripped down and framed around the panel to add strength and give the headboard a finished appearance.
A dado cut is made in the upper board of the headboard to house the LED strip and acrylic diffuser. Jonny tests the fit carefully, ensuring the acrylic slides in easily without binding, which keeps the look clean and professional.
Integrating the LED Lighting
LED strip lights are installed into the dado cut, transforming the headboard into a functional light source perfect for reading or relaxing. The acrylic panel sits in front of the lights, diffusing the glow to create a soft, even illumination.
End caps are added to keep the acrylic secure, and a dimmer switch is connected to allow adjustable brightness. This extra detail elevates the bed’s design while adding real practical value.
Final Assembly of the Bed
With the platform and headboard complete, it’s time to assemble the final structure. The headboard is attached to the top frame using long screws for extra support, ensuring the whole setup remains solid and stable.
Rubber feet are added to the bottom of the legs to protect floors and improve overall stability. Slats are cut and installed to support the mattress, providing even weight distribution across the frame.
For an extra polished look, Jonny suggests covering the slats with thin plywood. This optional step enhances the overall finish and helps the mattress sit more smoothly.
Sanding and Finishing
After final assembly, the entire bed frame is given a complete sanding to remove any roughness. Special attention is paid to exposed edges and corners, softening them slightly for both appearance and comfort.
A coat of dark walnut Danish oil is applied to enhance the grain of the pine and add protection. The rich color brings warmth to the clean modern lines and makes the bed frame look far more expensive than its material cost suggests.
A Modern and Functional Bedroom Upgrade
The completed platform bed is both sturdy and visually striking, blending contemporary design with practical details like the integrated LED lighting. It’s a centerpiece that instantly upgrades any bedroom.
Jonny’s build shows that you don’t need advanced joinery or exotic hardwoods to create something beautiful and long-lasting. Careful planning, smart material choices, and attention to detail make all the difference.
Whether you’re outfitting a master bedroom, guest room, or even a stylish rental property, this bed offers the perfect mix of style and utility. It’s a build that’s as rewarding to complete as it is to use every day.
