Modern Pegboard Project

Looking for a fun way to refresh a room? Madison from This Faithful Home has created an amazing pegboard DIY project that adds character and functionality to any space.

Materials and Tools Needed

  • 2 pieces of wood measuring 2 feet by 4 feet
  • 1x4x8 board for shelves
  • 1-inch dowel (6 feet long for pegs)
  • 2 boards at 1x2x8 for bracers
  • Various length screws
  • Miter saw / hand saw
  • Sandpaper / belt sander
  • 1-inch paddle bit
  • Drill
  • Tape measure / straight edge

Step 1: Clear and Rearrange the Room

First, Madison tackled the clutter in her guest room. She cleared out the laundry and everything stored under the bed to create a fresh space for the project. If you’re short on storage, consider using a raised bed to maximize space.

Step 2: Plan the Layout

Madison decided to create a focal wall with a modern pegboard. She measured the plywood and planned a grid for drilling holes. The holes would be spaced 4 inches apart, which accounts for the hole size itself. This spacing ensures that the pegboard has a uniform look once installed.

Step 3: Drill the Holes

Next, it was time to drill! Madison used a one-inch paddle bit to create the holes in the plywood. She drilled halfway through from one side, then flipped the board to drill from the other side for cleaner holes.

Step 4: Sand the Boards

After drilling, Madison sanded the edges of the boards to ensure a smooth finish. This step is crucial for a polished look and to avoid any splinters.

Step 5: Cut the Shelves and Dowels

Madison cut dowels into 4.5-inch lengths and created shelves in various sizes for added visual interest. She made two shelves at 10 inches, two at 16 inches, and one at 20 inches long.

Step 6: Prepare to Hang the Pegboard

Before hanging the pegboard, Madison cut bracers to support the weight of the boards. Properly securing them to wall studs is essential to ensure the pegboard can hold items without sagging.

Step 7: Hang the Pegboard

Madison carefully hung the pegboard on the wall, securing the bracers to the studs. This step required some precision to ensure everything was level and secure.

Step 8: Decorate and Enjoy!

The last step is decorating the pegboard with plants, shelves, and other decorative items. Madison was thrilled with how the project turned out, adding both style and functionality to her guest room.
