Looking for a budget-friendly outdoor furniture project? This modern cedar bench was created by Nathan from Nathan Builds, and it costs about $60 to make! Using simple materials like cedar fence pickets and 2x4s, this bench is both stylish and sturdy, making it a great addition to any outdoor space.

Materials and Tools Needed
- 5 Cedar 2″x4″x8′ boards
- 4 Cedar 5.5″x6′ fence pickets
- Outdoor wood glue
- 2.5-inch outdoor-rated pocket hole screws
- Wood planer
- Table saw (or miter/circular saw)
- Crosscut jig
- Brad nailer (optional)
- Hand plane
- Sanding tools
- Plastic feet (optional)
Step 1: Prepare the Cedar
Start by removing all staples from the cedar fence pickets. Use a planer to smooth out the sides of the pickets for a flat surface.

Step 2: Cut the Wood
Using a table saw, cut three lengths of 2x4s and three lengths of the pickets. If you don’t have a table saw, a miter saw or circular saw will also work. Use a crosscut jig to measure and set the stop block for the inner stretcher lengths.

Step 3: Assemble the Carcass
Connect all the pieces using pocket holes. It’s fine where you place them since these will be covered by the cedar pickets. Make sure to use plenty of outdoor glue on all joints for a strong bond.

Step 4: Add Center Stretchers
Mark out the spacing for the center stretchers. You might only need one, but it’s always good to overbuild a bit. Use sawdust to clean up any excess glue.

Step 5: Mitre the Corners
For a seamless look, miter the corners of the bench. Use a table saw to cut 45-degree angles and attach them with outdoor-rated glue and Brad nails.

Step 6: Cut and Attach the Seat Board
Measure the seat board based on the installed boards and cut it to size. Attach it to the structure using glue and screws. Make sure to check the fit before finalizing the cuts.

Step 7: Final Touches
After everything is assembled, do a little light sanding to smooth out any rough edges. If desired, add plastic feet to keep the bench off the ground and away from moisture.

And that’s it! This project is quick and easy, and you’ll end up with a beautiful, modern outdoor cedar bench. Nathan spent only $60 on materials, proving that you can create stylish outdoor furniture without breaking the bank.
