This modern outdoor bench project was created by DIY Montreal, and it’s perfect for anyone looking to enhance their garden or patio. Whether you need a bench, coffee table, or a footrest, this easy-to-follow guide will help you create a beautiful piece of furniture using just 2x4s.
Materials Needed
- 2 x 4 x 8′ lumber
- Waterproof wood glue (exterior type)
- Ikea Varda wood furniture stain & protector
- Plastic furniture glides
Tools Required
- Jointer
- Planer
- Mitre saw
- Power sander (orbital recommended)
- Mini foam roller
- Clamps
- Speed square
- Sandpaper (60, 120, and 220 grit)
Step 1: Milling the Wood
The first step is the milling process. You’ll need to make the edges of the 2x4s square to give the bench a modern look. Use a jointer and a planer to achieve this. If you’re unfamiliar with the milling process, detailed instructions can be found on the DIY Montreal website.
Step 2: Glue Up
Next, prepare for the glue-up. This step can be a bit nerve-wracking, so make sure you have everything ready. You will need a lot of clamps and exterior wood glue. An easy way to apply the glue is with a foam roller. Once everything is clamped up, let it dry overnight.
Step 3: Sanding
After removing the clamps, you may notice some imperfections. Don’t worry; sanding will fix that! Start with 60 grit sandpaper and gradually move to 120 and then to 220 grit for a smooth finish. Make sure to wear a respirator or dust mask to protect your lungs from dust.
Step 4: Applying Outdoor Finish
To protect your bench from the elements, apply an outdoor finish. Mary used Varda IKEA furniture protector and stain, which provides a nice honey brown finish while shielding the wood from rain and moisture. Simply wipe it on for easy application.
Step 5: Installing Furniture Glides
The final step is to install furniture glides. This process is straightforward: drill a hole, tap in a plastic anchor, and screw it in. This will protect your bench and make it easier to move.
And there you have it! Your modern outdoor bench is ready for use.
