Why Build Vintage Coffee Crates?

These handmade crates offer a unique combination of vintage aesthetics and modern functionality. Each crate is designed to hold coffee pods neatly, making it easier to organize and access your favorite varieties.

Additionally, the crates feature a compact design with sliding drawers, providing convenient storage in kitchens, offices, or coffee stations. They also make thoughtful, personalized gifts that anyone who appreciates coffee would love.

Josh’s Design Approach

Josh’s design inspiration came directly from antique wooden company crates often found in vintage shops. His version includes three drawers per crate, each holding up to 15 pods, allowing a total storage of 45 pods.

The crates are also stackable, providing flexibility to expand your storage as needed. Josh spent considerable time refining prototypes to ensure the final design is both attractive and practical for everyday use.

Materials and Wood Selection

Josh chose a combination of plywood and pine lumber for these crates, balancing durability, appearance, and cost-effectiveness. Pine provides an authentic vintage look, while plywood ensures stability and prevents warping or twisting.

Specifically, he used 1×8 pine boards for the short sides and thicker 2×6 pine boards for the longer sides. This combination created a strong and attractive frame suitable for regular use.

Building the Crate Frame

The initial build involved carefully cutting grooves into the short sides to accommodate the sliding drawers. Precise cuts were essential for ensuring the drawers slide smoothly without jamming.

Next, Josh resawed and crosscut the long sides from thicker boards, enhancing the rustic appearance by intentionally leaving saw marks visible. These added character and reinforced the vintage style he aimed to achieve.

Constructing the Drawers

Josh assembled each drawer using a carefully designed internal grid system, specifically sized to hold coffee pods securely. This design also makes it adaptable for storing other small items, highlighting the versatility of the crates.

Finger joint grooves were accurately cut to ensure a snug fit, making the drawers durable and structurally sound. Trim pieces were then attached at an angle, providing a seamless and professional look to the drawer fronts.

Finishing for a Vintage Look

To achieve the desired vintage aesthetic, Josh applied an unconventional stain made from instant coffee. This method not only provided a rich, warm color but also allowed for greater control over the intensity of the finish.

Each crate was fully immersed in the coffee stain solution, ensuring an even and authentic vintage appearance. Additional touches, like custom stamps on the sides, further enhanced the crates’ antique charm.

Building a Matching Tray

Josh complemented the crates with a matching wooden tray designed to sit atop the crates or function independently. This versatile tray shares the same design elements and finish, creating a cohesive look when used together.

He crafted the tray using the same pine boards, assembling it with biscuits and routed finger holds for easy handling. This additional component increased the crates’ functionality and overall visual appeal.

Final Thoughts on the Project

These vintage coffee crates offer practical storage solutions with timeless appeal, perfect for any coffee enthusiast’s home. The thoughtful details and craftsmanship involved in building these crates make them ideal as functional decor or gifts.
