Make Dead Simple Picture Frames

This project is by David Picciuto from Make Something.

This DIY project is not only straightforward but also enables you to create beautiful picture frames that can add a personal touch to your home decor.

Step 1: Gather Your Materials

Before you start, it’s essential to gather all the materials and tools you’ll need for this woodworking project. You’ll need:

  • Walnut scrap wood
  • Table saw
  • Jointer
  • Glue
  • Painters tape
  • Stapler
  • Glass cutter
  • Simple finish
  • Point driver

Having everything ready will make the process smoother and more enjoyable.

Step 2: Prepare the Wood

Start by preparing your walnut scrap wood. The surfaces may be rough, so it’s important to run them over the jointer to ensure a smooth finish. This step is crucial as it will help in achieving a clean and professional look for your picture frame.

Step 3: Cut the Frame Pieces

Next, you will need to cut the wood into four pieces. You don’t have to work to any specific dimensions at this point; just cut the wood down to manageable sizes. This gives you the flexibility to decide the final dimensions based on your artwork.

Step 4: Create the Rabbit Joint

With your pieces cut, it’s time to cut the rabbit joint using two passes on the table saw. This joint is what will hold the glass and artwork in place, so it’s important to get this right.

Step 5: Set Up the Picture Frame Sled

Now, set up your picture frame sled. You need to set it to the width of your artwork, which in this case is 17 inches. The sled will help you make accurate cuts for the top and bottom pieces of your frame.

Step 6: Cut the Frame Sides

With the sled ready, cut the first side of the frame. After cutting, you will use the sled to measure and cut the second side. This method ensures that both sides are perfectly parallel and fit together seamlessly.

Step 7: Measure and Cut the Remaining Sides

Next, measure the two sides of your frame. You can set the stop on the sled to 22 inches, which is the height you need. Cut the two sides accordingly to complete the frame structure.

Step 8: Glue the Frame Together

Before gluing the pieces together, apply a bit of glue to the end grain and let it dry. This will seal the end grain and prevent the glue from soaking in too much. Once dried, you can glue the frame together, ensuring you do it face up to check for any gaps in the seams.

Step 9: Reinforce the Joints

To reinforce the joints, use a staple gun to staple the four corners of the frame. This method is effective, especially since the frame is quite thin, and the splines would not have enough material to hold properly.

Step 10: Cut the Glass to Size

Next, you will need to cut a piece of glass to fit your frame. Using a glass cutter, score the glass and then break it along the scored line. This step is crucial as the glass will protect your artwork.

Step 11: Apply Finish to the Frame

For a beautiful final touch, apply a simple finish to the frame. Wipe it on, let it sit for a few minutes, and then wipe off the excess. This will enhance the wood’s natural beauty and protect it.

Step 12: Assemble the Frame

Now that you have your frame complete and the glass cut, it’s time to assemble everything. Place the artwork in the frame, followed by the glass, and secure it in place with a point driver. This will keep everything snug and in place.

Step 13: Add Bumpers and Hang

Finally, add bumpers to the bottom of the frame. This will offset the frame from the wall, preventing it from scratching the surface. Once everything is in place, your picture frame is ready to hang!

Conclusion

Creating a picture frame can be a rewarding and enjoyable woodworking project. With these simple steps, you can craft a beautiful frame that showcases your favorite artwork. Remember, woodworking is all about experimentation and creativity, so feel free to adjust the dimensions and techniques to suit your style.
