Make a Coffee Table from a Single 2×6

This coffee table was built and designed by Josh Wright from Josh Wright Woodworking, and it’s perfect for any living space. This step-by-step guide will walk you through the process of creating a stunning coffee table using just one 8-foot 2×6.

Materials:

  • 1 – 8ft 2×6
  • Wood glue
  • Shelac (for finishing)

Tools:

  • Miter saw
  • Table saw
  • Dado stack (optional)
  • Finish screws
  • Sanding discs

Step 1: Cutting the Wood

Start by cutting the 2×6 into two sections of about 30 inches and two sections of about 18 inches, depending on the kerf of your blade.

Step 2: Removing the Round Over

Next, take your sections to the table saw and cut an eighth inch off each side of each piece to remove the round over.

Step 3: Preparing the Tabletop

Use the 30-inch sections to create the tabletop by cutting each section to four and a half inches wide. Then, resaw the boards in half and glue them together to form a panel.

Step 4: Making the Breadboard Ends

For the breadboard ends, take one of the 18-inch sections and re-saw it in half. Cut a quarter-inch groove in both pieces for joining to the tabletop.

Step 5: Fitting the Breadboard Ends

Unclamp the panel and cut the tenons on the ends of the panel to accept the breadboard ends. Fit them in place, noting that some prefer to dowel them instead of gluing to allow for wood movement.

Step 6: Making the Legs

Using the remaining 18-inch section, cut out the legs and shorter sides of the apron. Taper the legs to 2 and 3/8 inches at the top down to an inch and a quarter at the bottom.

Step 7: Joining the Apron and Legs

Cut notches in the legs to fit the shorter sides of the apron. Then, create half lap joints to attach the longer sides of the apron to the legs.

Step 8: Attaching the Top

Attach the top to the legs using finish screws, which have small heads for a cleaner look.

Step 9: Sanding and Finishing

Sand the entire table up to 220 grit and apply a couple of coats of shellac for a beautiful finish.
