Step 1: Prepare the Wood

Start by removing the bark that is coming apart from the sides of the half log. You can use a chisel or your hands to peel it away.

Step 2: Thicknessing the Wood

If you don’t have a planer, you can thickness the wood using a router sled. This method will take a bit longer but is effective.

Step 3: Inspect for Damage

While working on the wood, check for any damage such as ring shake, which can occur when a tree flexes or falls. Decide whether to fill these areas with epoxy or to cut them away.

Step 4: Truing Up the Ends

Use a bandsaw to true up the ends of the logs. After this, fill any wormholes or voids with Total Boat epoxy mixed with black diamond pigment for a stylish finish.

Step 5: Sanding the Surface

Once the epoxy has cured, sand all surfaces down to a final grit of 120 to prepare for finishing.

Step 6: Cleaning the Wood

Before applying the finish, clean the wood with Rubio Monocoat Raw Wood Cleaner to remove any debris from the grain.

Step 7: Finishing the Charcuterie Board

Finally, apply the Rubio Monocoat finish to enhance the natural beauty of the walnut. Allow it to cure before using the board.
