Make a Basic Wooden Bench

This basic wooden bench was created by B&O Craftsman, and it’s perfect for adding functionality and style to your home. Whether you’re a beginner or just looking for a quick DIY, this guide will walk you through the steps to make your very own bench.

Materials and Tools Needed

  • 1 piece of 2×12 lumber (8ft long)
  • Wood glue
  • 3.5-inch deck screws
  • Wood dowels (1/2 inch)
  • Wood stain and polycrylic finish

Tools Required:

  • Miter saw
  • Drill
  • Carpenter’s square
  • Flush trim saw
  • Sander (hand sander and power sander)
  • Clamps

Step 1: Cutting the Lumber

Start by cutting your 2×12 board to a length of 4 feet. This will be the top of your bench. For the legs, cut two pieces to a length of 16 inches each. You can use a handsaw, but a power tool will make the job faster.

Step 2: Marking the Leg Positions

Next, measure in 4 inches from one end of the board and 5.5 inches from the other end. Repeat this on both sides. These marks indicate where the legs will be attached to the top of the bench.

Step 3: Attaching the Legs

Apply wood glue to the marked areas on the top board and place the legs on the glue spots. Use clamps to hold them in place and ensure they are square while the glue dries. Once the glue has set, flip the board over.

Step 4: Securing the Legs

Add 3.5-inch deck screws to secure the legs to the top. To ensure proper placement, use a carpenter’s square to find the center of the board and mark your screw hole locations. Drill pilot holes using an 8-inch drill bit, then insert the screws.

Step 5: Finishing with Dowels

To hide the screw heads, apply glue to the holes and insert wood dowels. Use a mallet to tap them in place, allowing a bit to stick out. Once the glue has dried, use a flush trim saw to cut the dowels flush with the surface.

Step 6: Sanding the Surface

Now it’s time to sand the bench. Start with 60 grit sandpaper and work your way up to 100 grit to ensure a smooth finish. A smooth surface is important for the final look and feel of the bench.

Step 7: Distressing the Wood

If you want to give your bench a rustic look, you can distress the wood. This process involves adding character to the surface, which I will cover in more detail in a separate video. For now, enjoy the process of making your bench unique.

Step 8: Staining and Finishing

Once you are satisfied with the sanding and distressing, apply your chosen wood stain. After the stain dries, add a coat of polycrylic for protection. Sand lightly between coats for a smooth finish. Repeat the process until you achieve the desired look.

Step 9: Enjoy Your New Bench!

After three coats of polycrylic, your bench is complete! Place it wherever you like and enjoy your new piece of furniture. It’s perfect for the end of the bed or any other space in your home.
