This DIY king bed frame project was designed and built by Angela from Angela Marie Made, and it’s perfect for your bedroom transformation.
With a cost of less than $200 in lumber, it’s both affordable and stylish.
Materials Needed for Your DIY King Bed Frame:
- 4×4 lumber (for posts)
- 2×4 lumber (for headboard, footboard, and side rails)
- 2×2 lumber (for support)
- 1×4 lumber (for trim)
- 4′ x 8′ sheet of formaldehyde-free plywood, 3/4″ thick
- Kreg screws
- Wood glue
- Kreg jig
- Miter saw
- Drill
- Clamps
- Speed square (optional)
Step 1: Gather Materials and Make Initial Cuts
Begin by gathering all your materials and making your initial lumber cuts. You can find the full cut list on Angela’s blog. For the plywood, consider using formaldehyde-free plywood for a healthier choice.
Step 2: Add Pocket Holes to the Headboard Lumber
Using a Kreg jig, add four pocket holes along each side and the top edge of the plywood headboard piece. Make sure your jig is set for 3/4″ thick wood.
Step 3: Assemble the Headboard
Attach one of the 2x4s to the top of the 4×4 post using wood glue and Kreg screws. Next, attach your plywood board, ensuring it is inset by 3/4″ using scrap wood for support.
Step 4: Add Trim to the Headboard
Measure the inside of the headboard and cut your trim to size. Install it along the inside edges with wood glue and brad nails.
Step 5: Prepare the Footboard
Add pocket holes to the footboard lumber using the Kreg jig. Then assemble the footboard in a similar manner to the headboard.
Step 6: Assemble the Footboard
Attach the plywood between the two 2x2s, ensuring that all pocket holes face up, and secure it with wood glue and Kreg screws.
Step 7: Add Pocket Holes to the Side Rails
Use the Kreg jig to add pocket holes along all sides of the plywood boards for the side rails. Add pocket holes every 8 to 10 inches.
Step 8: Assemble the Side Rails
Place the plywood between the 2x2s and attach them the same way as the footboard. Make sure the plywood is flush with the back edge.
Step 9: Build the Middle Slat Boards
For each of the six 1x4s, mark the positions for the slat supports and attach them accordingly.
Step 10: Paint or Stain the Bed Frame
It’s best to paint or stain the bed frame before assembling all parts. Fill any nail holes with stainable wood filler or spackle.
Step 11: Assemble the Bed Frame
Move the frame into place and attach the side rails to the headboard and footboard using Kreg screws. Leave a 6.5-inch clearance under the side rails.
