It took 2 years of testing sanding solutions and sandpaper!

The video “It took 2 years of testing sanding solutions and sandpaper!” is by Izzy Swan. In this engaging presentation, Izzy shares the two-year journey he undertook to explore and test various sanding solutions, sandpapers, and dust extraction systems.

Two years ago, Izzy built a unique device designed specifically for testing sanders, sandpaper, and dust extractors. This innovative project kicked off an unexpected journey filled with discoveries and insights into the world of woodworking. Along with his friends John and Matt, Izzy set out to test various dust extractors, including models from DeWalt, Festool, SurfPrep, Fine, and 3M.

In a light-hearted segment, each participant shared their predictions on which dust extractor would perform the best. The excitement was palpable as they prepared for the test, with Izzy confidently stating, “I chose the correct extract; I’m just calling it right now.” After running the tests, it was revealed that SurfPrep emerged as the clear winner, followed closely by 3M and DeWalt, with Festool and Fine trailing behind.

After this initial success, Izzy dove deeper into the world of SurfPrep, testing all their products, both electric and pneumatic. He emphasized the importance of quality abrasives and exceptional customer service, which he found to be hallmarks of the SurfPrep brand.

As part of his journey, Izzy also highlighted the need for a dedicated sanding area in the shop. While they had a basic setup, they often found themselves moving equipment around for larger projects, which proved to be inconvenient. To solve this issue, they decided to build a mobile sanding station, using SurfPrep’s basic mobile sanding cart as a foundation.

This mobile sanding station became a game-changer for their woodworking projects. Izzy and his team customized it to hold various sanders securely, including a unique design that allowed for storage of the sander with the foam pad still attached. The use of 3D printing technology facilitated these innovations, enabling them to create tailored holders for their tools.

Customizing the mobile sanding station

In addition to the convenient storage solutions, Izzy made improvements such as adding a top layer to the cart, which featured EVA foam for better grip and aesthetics. He also integrated a pneumatic dust extractor that activates when the sander is turned on, ensuring efficient dust collection during use.

Adding features to the mobile sanding station

Izzy also discussed the importance of sanding sleeves, which he and Maggie created to enhance comfort and protect finished surfaces while sanding. He shared that these sleeves made a significant difference in their sanding experience, making it easier to work on various projects without damaging the material.

As he wrapped up his presentation, Izzy provided insights into the types of sandpapers they used. He recommended three key types: Red Riptide for aggressive sanding, Yellow Sandstone for finishing, and White Lightning for hard finishes. This simplified approach to choosing sandpaper allows woodworkers to easily select the right product for their needs.

Izzy concluded his informative video by encouraging viewers to consider improving their sanding setups, emphasizing the benefits of using quality products like those offered by SurfPrep. His experience serves as a testament to the importance of investing time and resources into finding the right tools for woodworking.
