Chase Christopher shares an easy-to-follow guide for anyone looking to build their own desk. This project is perfect for those who may not have much woodworking experience, limited tools, or small spaces.

Materials and Tools Needed:

  • 26 feet of 2×4 wood (4 pieces of 8-foot lengths)
  • 1 piece of 2×4 foot desktop (pre-made glue panel or sanded plywood)
  • Pocket hole screws (1.25 inches)
  • Wood glue
  • Wood primer
  • Paint (leftover trim paint works well)
  • Stain and polyurethane for finishing
  • Tools: Miter saw or circular saw (or hand saw), drill or impact driver, speed square, measuring tape, clamps, paint brushes, Kreg pocket hole jig
  • Sandpaper (coarse and fine grit, e.g., 60/80 and 150/200)

Step 1: Sand the Desktop

Start by sanding the corners of your 2×4 foot panel. Depending on your preference, you can round them off or leave them squared. Begin with a coarser grit sandpaper and move to a finer grit for a smooth finish.

Step 2: Stain the Desktop

Once sanded, apply a coat of stain to the desktop. This allows it to dry while you work on the frame. Wipe off any excess stain with a clean rag to ensure an even finish.

Step 3: Cut the Frame Pieces

Using your saw, cut the 2x4s according to the measurements needed for the frame. For example, you’ll need pieces that measure 43.75 inches for the long sides and 15.75 inches for the short sides. Refer to the video for specific cuts.

Step 4: Sand the Edges of the Frame

After cutting, sand the edges of the frame pieces to remove any burrs from the saw. This step is crucial for a clean look and feel.

Step 5: Drill Pocket Holes

Using the Kreg pocket hole jig, drill two pocket holes into each end of the horizontal pieces. For the vertical pieces, drill additional holes that will connect to the desktop later.

Step 6: Assemble the Frame

Start by assembling the sides of the frame. Use clamps to secure the pieces together and insert the pocket screws into the drilled holes. Ensure the best-looking side of the legs faces outward.

Step 7: Prime and Paint the Frame

Once the frame is assembled, apply primer to the wood. After letting it dry for about an hour, paint the frame with your chosen color. You may apply one or two coats for full coverage.

Step 8: Attach the Desktop

Place a bead of wood glue around the edges of the frame where the desktop will sit. Center the desktop on top, ensuring a 5/8 inch overlap on all sides, then clamp it down. Secure it from the underside with screws through the pocket holes.

Step 9: Finish with Polyurethane

The final step is to apply a coat of polyurethane to the entire desk. This provides a protective layer against scratches, stains, and damage. Allow it to dry completely before using the desk.

And there you have it! A stylish and functional desk built for under $60.
