How to Make Rustic Wood Jack-O-Lanterns

Looking to add some charming rustic decor to your Halloween collection? These delightful Jack-O-Lanterns were created by Maverick Designs Woodworking, and they are a fantastic woodworking project for any skill level.

Whether you’re a beginner or have some experience, this guide will walk you through the steps to create your own unique lanterns.

Materials and Tools Needed

  • Cedar fence pickets
  • Dowels (for stems)
  • Battery-operated flickering lights
  • Wood glue
  • 1-inch brad nails
  • Sandpaper (80 grit)
  • Scroll saw
  • Miter saw
  • Table saw
  • Drill press
  • Wood stain (orange or your choice)
  • Burning tool (for rustic finish)

Step 1: Prepare the Boards

The first step is to plane the cedar fence pickets to remove the rough exterior. This isn’t mandatory if you prefer a rustic look, but it’s easier to work with smooth surfaces and avoid splinters.

Step 2: Cut the Lantern Pieces

Using the miter saw, cut the front, back, and sides of the lanterns to your desired length. A height of 10 inches works well. Then, rip the pieces to width using the table saw, ensuring all edges are straight for easy assembly.

Step 3: Create the Faces

Purchase or create templates for Jack-O-Lantern faces. You can find files online that include various designs. Print them out, wrap them around the boards, and secure them with painter’s tape. Use a drill press to make starter holes before cutting out the faces with a scroll saw.

Step 4: Assemble the Lanterns

Now it’s time to assemble the lantern boxes. Use wood glue along with 1-inch brad nails to secure the pieces together. Be careful to avoid shooting nails into the cutout areas.

Step 5: Finish the Lanterns

After assembly, you can burn the exterior to give it a rustic look. Use a burning tool carefully, keeping a damp cloth nearby to manage any small embers. Once burned, apply a wood stain in orange or your choice of color.

Step 6: Add the Stem

For the finishing touch, attach a small dowel to serve as the pumpkin stem. Pre-drill holes for easy installation.
