Looking to add a touch of craftsmanship to your kitchen? Ryan Willoughby from The Will To Make has created a beautiful spoon rest project that combines functionality with woodworking skills. This step-by-step guide will walk you through the process of making your own spoon rest.

Materials Needed

  • Maple board
  • Wood glue (Titebond recommended)
  • Sandpaper (220 grit recommended)
  • Butcher block finish

Tools Required

  • Miter saw
  • Bandsaw
  • Dremel tool
  • Clamps
  • File

Step 1: Prepare the Wood

The project begins with a board of maple. Ryan used the plastic case of his sandpaper to trace the outline of the spoon rest. This shape was traced out twice for cutting.

Step 2: Cutting the Shape

Using a miter saw, Ryan cut the traced shapes to make them more manageable. The pieces were then moved to the bandsaw for further cutting.

Step 3: Creating the Inner Cutout

For one of the pieces, Ryan needed to cut out the middle, leaving only the outer frame. This was done on the bandsaw as well.

Step 4: Refining the Shape

After the initial cuts, the next step involved refining the shape with hand sanding and a file to ensure smooth edges.

Step 5: Gluing the Pieces Together

Once the pieces were shaped, Ryan glued the top piece to the bottom piece and clamped them together to dry.

Step 6: Sanding for Flushness

After the glue dried, he removed the clamps and sanded the outside to make the two pieces flush with each other.

Step 7: Carving the Groove

Next, Ryan marked out a groove along the outside of the spoon rest to catch any liquids that might run off the spoon. He carved this groove using a Dremel tool.

Step 8: Final Refinements

Using the Dremel with a sanding attachment, he refined the overall shape of the spoon rest before giving it a final sanding up to 220 grit.

Step 9: Applying the Finish

The last step was to apply several coats of butcher block finish. Ryan applied it heavily, allowed it to sit for a while, and then wiped off the excess.

Conclusion

And with that, the spoon rest project was complete! Ryan expressed his satisfaction with the final product, highlighting its quality and functionality.
