This solid cherry bookcase was built and designed by Kings Fine Woodworking, and it’s perfect for any home. Whether you’re new to woodworking or have some experience, this guide will walk you through the steps to create a beautiful and functional piece for your space.

Materials and Tools

  • Cherry wood
  • Quarter-inch cherry plywood (with MDF core)
  • Titebond III glue
  • Sandpaper (various grits)
  • Lacquer finish
  • Table saw
  • Jointer
  • Planer
  • Router and rabbeting bit
  • Dado blade
  • Clamps
  • Random orbit sander

Step 1: Milling the Wood

The project begins with milling the cherry wood. After determining rough lengths, the creator joints one edge and rips the other edge parallel on the table saw. Next, one face is flattened on the jointer, and the other face is made parallel using the planer. For those without these tools, lumber can also be purchased pre-surfaced from a hardwood dealer.

Step 2: Cutting to Final Dimensions

After dimensioning the wood, the creator cuts the pieces to their exact final dimensions. Selecting the best grain pattern for the visible sides is important for the overall aesthetics of the bookcase.

Step 3: Laying Out and Cutting Dados

Using a ruler, the creator lays out where the dados will be cut. The dado blade is set to a quarter-inch depth to create the grooves. After making the cuts, a test fit is conducted to ensure the pieces fit well.

Step 4: Pre-Assembly and Final Adjustments

To ensure accuracy, the creator performs a pre-assembly by laying out the shelf and marking where the dados should go. This method helps avoid complicated measurements and ensures a precise fit. After cutting the dados, the sides of the bookcase are trimmed to their final width.

Step 5: Creating Rabbets for the Back

A rabbeting bit is set up in the router table to create a recess for the plywood back. The creator stops short at the ends, ensuring the rabbets won’t show through the sides. This can also be done using a dado blade if preferred.

Step 6: Sanding the Project

After all the cuts are made, the entire project is sanded to remove any burn marks or rough edges. This step is crucial for achieving a smooth finish on the bookcase.

Step 7: Dry Fitting the Bookcase

Next, the creator dry fits the entire bookcase together to visualize the final product and ensure everything fits properly. This step is essential for checking the alignment of all pieces.

Step 8: Glue-Up Process

During the glue-up, the creator applies a generous amount of glue to all joints, emphasizing the importance of squeeze-out to ensure a strong bond. Clamps are used liberally to hold everything in place while the glue dries.

Step 9: Cleaning Up Excess Glue

After clamping, any excess glue is cleaned up. The creator demonstrates a clever method of using a pointed piece of wood wrapped in a wet paper towel to reach corners and remove glue without damaging the wood.

Step 10: Finishing Touches

Finally, the bookcase is finished with lacquer, providing a beautiful and protective coating. The creator prefers lacquer for its ease of application and stunning finish. A respirator is worn during this process for safety.
