Step 2: Prepare the Wire Reel

Begin by punching down all the little nails on the top of the wire reel. This will help you sand the surface later without damaging your sanding belts. Once all the nails are flush, you’re ready to mark your cuts.

Step 3: Mark and Cut the Reel

Using the framing square, mark out where you want to cut the reel for the shooting table. You’ll cut out sections to create both right and left-handed shooting areas. Make sure to drill holes next to the internal reel to guide your Sawzall blade.

Step 4: Clean Up Your Cuts

After cutting, clean up the edges to ensure they’re smooth. You may need to do some touch-up cuts with your Sawzall to get everything looking nice and even.

Step 5: Sand the Surface

Now it’s time to sand the top and edges of the reel. This will give it a nice smooth finish and prevent any sharp edges. Use a hand sander for best results.

Step 6: Create the Seats

Next, cut two pieces of wood to create seats that will attach to the reel. Make sure to find the right height for comfort while shooting.

Step 7: Stain and Seal the Table

Once everything is sanded, clean off any dust and start staining the reel. Apply at least two coats for a good seal against the elements. Allow it to dry for 24 hours before using it.

Step 8: Final Assembly

After the stain has dried, secure the seats to the table using screws. Make sure everything is tightly fastened for stability while shooting.
