Looking for a stylish and functional way to enhance your space? These floating shelves were built and designed by Justin and Jess from Justin and Jess DIY, and they’re perfect for any room in your home.
Materials Needed
- 2×8 lumber (length as desired)
- ½ inch dowels
- 3-inch wood screws
- Wood stain (Early American or Walnut)
Tools Required
- Circular saw
- Drill
- Sanding equipment (electric sander recommended)
- Clamps
- Level
- Measuring tape
Step 1: Measure and Cut the Boards
Start by measuring the desired length for your shelves. We chose 27 inches based on the existing towel rack. Mark your measurements on the 2×8 board and cut using a circular saw.
Step 2: Drill Holes for the Dowels
Next, determine where to drill holes for the dowels. We positioned them about an inch in from the edge and centered in the middle of the shelf. Measure approximately four inches deep for the dowels and drill the holes accordingly.
Step 3: Sand the Boards
Once the holes are drilled, sand the boards using 120 grit sandpaper with an electric sander to smooth out any rough edges and ensure a nice finish.
Step 4: Rip the Boards
The next step is to rip the boards to the desired width. Mark an inch and a half on the inside of the board and use a straight edge to guide your cut. Use a circular saw with an adapter for better accuracy.
Step 5: Cut the Dowels
Measure and cut the dowels to about four inches in length. You will need six dowels for two shelves.
Step 6: Sand the Dowels
Mark the part of the dowel that will be secured to the wall and sand the remaining portion to allow it to fit smoothly into the shelf.
Step 7: Stain the Shelves
Choose your stain color and apply it to the shelves. We initially selected Early American but switched to Walnut for a darker finish. Allow the stain to dry for 24 hours.
Step 8: Install the Shelves
Locate the wall studs and mark where the shelves will be installed. Pre-drill holes through the ripped part of the shelf into the wall studs for secure installation. Use a level to ensure everything is straight.
Step 9: Final Adjustments
If any shelves feel loose, reinforce them by adding additional screws into the studs at an angle for better stability.
