Materials Needed:

  • 3/4″ Melamine
  • 4″x4″ Cedar
  • 2″x4″ Cedar
  • 1″x4″ Cedar
  • Corrugated roofing panel
  • Quickrete 5000 concrete mix
  • Remesh
  • Silicone caulk
  • Construction adhesive
  • Low-lustre sealer
  • Various screws and nails

Tools Required:

  • Kreg track saw
  • Miter saw
  • Joiner
  • Planer
  • Electric mixer (for concrete)
  • Drill
  • Various clamps
  • Multi-tool

Step 1: Create the Concrete Countertop Mold

The first step is to break down the three-quarter melamine to make the mold for your concrete countertop. Start by laminating two pieces of melamine together to create a void for the countertop’s drop edge.

Step 2: Prepare the Mold

Wrap the edges of the melamine with clear plastic packing tape to prevent moisture from damaging it. Attach the bottom of the mold and draw reference lines for screw locations.

Step 3: Mix and Pour the Concrete

Use an electric mixer to mix the concrete, which makes the process much easier. Fill the mold halfway with concrete, place the remesh, and then pour the remaining concrete on top.

Step 4: Build the Bar Base

For the bar base, use cedar, which is naturally rot-resistant. Cut the pieces using the miter saw and join them for a sturdy frame.

Step 5: Assemble the Frame

Use heavy-duty pocket hole screws to assemble the frame. Make sure to check for squareness as you go.

Step 6: Create the Bottom Shelf

Cut slats for the bottom shelf and attach them using nails, ensuring you have the right spacing between each slat.

Step 7: Attach the Corrugated Panels

Cut and attach the corrugated roofing panels to the frame for added style and protection.

Step 8: Finish the Concrete Countertop

Once the concrete has cured, remove it from the mold and sand the edges for a smooth finish. Apply a low-lustre sealer to enhance the appearance.
